Wasteland 2 Beta Begins

Brian Fargo of inXile entertainment tweets that the beta of Wasteland 2 is now available to backers of their RPG sequel. He points the way to the Kickstarter update on the topic which helpfully warns: "PLEASE DO READ THIS UPDATE BEFORE YOU START TESTING." The update notes that no restrictions are being made on sharing impressions of this, so expect previews and gameplay videos to follow.

Is there any way to get into the beta at this point if I did not pledge on kickstarter?

And how many times have we seen this sort of shit result in a bug-ridden mess at launch?

Yeah, I fucking hate that betas are pre-sales tool now instead of actually about fixing bugs. If this thing is buggy as shit at release I'll be demanding a refund.

You actually got the game at the $15 level, so if you're donating, you automatically get the game.

Having people spend more in order to play Beta is a good thing IMO. Ensures that only those that are that adamant about playing Beta actually are also those that would normally provide feedback to inXile about the beta.

You are incorrect. In the last 2 weeks during the closed beta they released over a dozen patches. So yeah, they are fixing bugs.

What they should have done was limit beta testing to people who pledged over $100. Many are still too stupid to understand what beta means.

Woohoo! I just need...wait, I didn't pay enough to get beta access.

I paid $50 for a boxed game and it looks like beta access was $55+. Oh well. I'll wait.

The combat is entirely unlike Wasteland 1 and more like FOT's turnbased mode or more recently Shadowrun Returns and XCOM. You can't really compare it to the original game at all.

I hope you really like the combat in Wasteland 2, as it will be the combat mechanic for Torment:Numenera.

I know. I backed it as well and voted for turnbased.

It's like Wasteland. It may be "like" Fallout Tactics in that you have a team, but like I said, that's like Wasteland. It's nice that you can be zoomed in, or you can pull the camera back all the way to an isometric view.

Worldmap exploration and random encounters are very similar to Wasteland 1. Mountains block your movement. Radiation zones can kill. I don't remember having to keep track of water in the original, but it's a nice touch. If the final worldmap size is similar to Fallout it would be a dream come true.

Party control is similar to Wasteland 1. Everybody is an independent character with their own background story and stats to manage. I like the option to write your own biography for custom characters. During combat you control them one at a time much like FOT.

Some random thoughts and things to look for:

My first playthrough I killed every badguy I came across. With the right skills I managed to talk my way out of a couple major battles where previously a fight seemed inevitable.

Scrap is currency. After my first random encounter I didn't realize this and left a fortune behind.

The game seems to want to run in windowed mode because every time it launches I still have the Windows mouse cursor over the main menu. There's also somekinda mouselag or smoothing that feels really awkward.

Shadows are glitchy in certain places with random flickering. It's pretty much the only graphical issue I spotted.

Editing saved games is really damn easy. If you want to go back with maxed out stats and see how certain skills work it's simply a matter of editing an xml file with Notepad or whatever you prefer.

I noticed when I use a custom portrait, save the game, exit, and reload, my character's custom portrait vanished. Fixing it requires opening the saved game with Notepad and re-adding the correct portrait name.

Wasteland 2 is good, it's very good.

It's captured that feeling of playing FO1/2 for the first time. I'm also impressed by the sheer amount of skills in the game, and the game seems to make use of all of them. I also love the games quirky sense of humor. Giant fly? It's called a Supafly in Wasteland 2.

Oh fuck yeah! Does the game have an overarching storyline? Someone mentioned Fallout Tactics. I hated Fallout Tactics because, well it wasnt an RPG. Not really. Its not like Fallout Tactics is it?

I turned on battle lines.

Only played 20 minutes so far. Feel of the game so far is good. Haven't seen any bugs yet, but I will of course try to break stuff in order to report it to inXile.

I'm not sure about what others do, but I keep a linked list of games in development that I have an interest in and imo by far we have the most interesting games coming out in the next 12'ish months that I've ever seen. So much diversity and not the same old, perhaps same genre's but different takes, takes the big boys are too afraid to attempt. As mentioned this, Shroud and Original Sin are just 3 of dozens that I'm looking forward to.

Played a couple hours and so far they totally nailed it. Very hopeful for the final release version. The music is perfect.

I'm definitely getting a "smarter Fallout Tactics" vibe. Also, adding custom portraits couldn't be easier. So relieved.

I was the same way. Don't even know when I'll get around to playing it. At first I thought "na, I'll just wait, don't want to spoil the experience!" and within 5 minutes I was logging in to grab my steam key.

I swear, we're in another golden age of gaming right now. So much stuff to play, and so little time.
