Thief at 15

Rock, Paper, Shotgun notes yesterday marks 15 years since Thief: The Dark Project shipped (thanks nin), which checks with the Wikipedia, but I think I'll trust our archive from that time that it was actually 15 years ago today, which was a Tuesday. Either way, it's been that long since the release of the stealth classic. In other gaming history, it was 16 years ago today that QUAKE II went gold, and 14 years ago today that QUAKE III Arena went gold, a stark example of how much quicker game development was back in the day. And it was 10 years ago today that X²: The Threat arrived in North American and Australian stores. Rounding out the anniversaries, it was nine years ago today that Painkiller: Battle Out Of Hell shipped, kicking off that series.

.plans

3D Realms' George Broussard updated his .plan mentioning that morbid is working on a 3Dfx 1.1 Shadow Warrior patch, and giving a bit of an update on Duke Nukem Forever.

16 friggin' years ago, mentions of Duke Nukem Forever.

Thief: The Dark Project remains one of my all time favorite games, right there next to Elder Scrolls Arena and Privateer.

These games originally got me excited about PC gaming and hold a very special place.

And apparently it's still superior to Rebirth.

Is it looking through rose colored glasses of me to say that like Quakes effect on FPS, Thief was a huge influence (perhaps the biggest) on the stealth genre?

Rose coloured glasses have nothig to do with fishing a statement out of te proverbial well of facts.

Level of noise depending on surface; the level of Garrett being visible to te enemy depending on the darkness level of the shadow he hid in; creating shadows by turning off lights; rope arrow! All revolutionary stuff! Thief gave birth to stealth in games!

Deadly Shadows.... really.... Weird how different some peoples takes are. I thought that game had excellent art-direction with their lighting and color. Beyond that, it was hardly a Thief game. Fuck Deadly Shadows. Fuck its bugs, fuck its lack of rope arrows, fuck its loading times and sub-divided maps, fuck its in-engine cutscenes and their lack of continuity in artistic vision, and fuck its shitty plot that turned Garrett from an amazing anti-hero into a messiah for a unnecessarily over-dramatic plot. Everything about that game ruined Thief for me. Viva la Dishonored.

Though I still tip my hat to you for your Red Dwarf sig quote. Smoke me a kipper, et al.

Upvote for mentioning Privateer.
This game is so rarely talked about that I sometimes think I only played it in my dreams.

Thief of course is legendary as well and as far as I recall, the father of stealth games.

If there are any Thief fans who haven't tried the Dark Mod yet, check it out. I gave it a whirl after the news that it went standalone and was very impressed. Very true to the original feel of Thief.

I realize I might be lynched for this but, I feel metal gear solid was a much bigger influence to be honest. Also thief was hardly the first game with stealth.

Thief was also PC only, so it's certainly possible MGS had a wider base.

Dizam, gangsta! Get yo hate on! Well, to each their own. Some fair criticisms I warrant, but the pros outweighed the cons for me.

10 years since X2: The Threat. And 10 years of regression for X-Rebirth. The game is dumber than the original X, apart from pretty graphics (with shitty performance.)

Yes, because those small levels (split into even smaller areas), the streamlined design of the levels, the lack of rope arrows, and the all over consolized feeling to it made it much better than the first two games. No, thanks. I like Thief 1's story best, but Thief 2 is all over the better game. Thief 3 was a huge letdown. But we all know that the new Thief game will stay closer to Thief 3 than to the first two games, so you should like it.

I think people tend to exaggerate how bad Deadly Shadows was. Yes, the lack of rope arrows was disappointing but the Thief experience is comprised of more than just rope arrows. And yes, the levels were smaller to accommodate the limited memory of consoles but they were still pretty open-ended. Most importantly, the game still focused on stealing stuff and the game's sound and shadow mechanics remained faithful to the series. The game's style and tone were also faithful to the series, whether you liked the actual story or not.

Thief 2 is still the best in the series but Deadly Shadows was not a bad game.

Also, I'd say that Thief has been way more influential than MGS. MGS's stealth mechanics were extremely rudimentary. Stealth consisted of avoiding enemy vision cones and hiding behind cover. Since Thief's release, we've seen way more games copy Thief's stealth mechanics than MGS's stealth mechanics.

Oh Jesus, I know I must sound boring as hell because Ive been trumpeting on about this game in almost every single thread since I got it off GOG a few days ago. Ever since installing it, my jaw has been stuck to the floor by how damn awesome and brilliant the game is. If you love space sims and havent played it, you are doing yourself a huge disservice:
