Thief at 15

Rock, Paper, Shotgun notes yesterday marks 15 years since Thief: The Dark Project shipped (thanks nin), which checks with the Wikipedia, but I think I'll trust our archive from that time that it was actually 15 years ago today, which was a Tuesday. Either way, it's been that long since the release of the stealth classic. In other gaming history, it was 16 years ago today that QUAKE II went gold, and 14 years ago today that QUAKE III Arena went gold, a stark example of how much quicker game development was back in the day. And it was 10 years ago today that X: The Threat arrived in North American and Australian stores. Rounding out the anniversaries, it was nine years ago today that Painkiller: Battle Out Of Hell shipped, kicking off that series.

Deadly Shadows is still the best. Two words, Shalebridge Cradle.

Yes, because those small levels (split into even smaller areas), the streamlined design of the levels, the lack of rope arrows, and the all over consolized feeling to it made it much better than the first two games. No, thanks. I like Thief 1's story best, but Thief 2 is all over the better game. Thief 3 was a huge letdown. But we all know that the new Thief game will stay closer to Thief 3 than to the first two games, so you should like it.
