Out of the Blue

My reprieve from yard work yesterday turned sour when the heating guy showed up to find out why the heat on the second floor isn't working. Flash forward to midnight, where I am paying off the plumber for a few hours work installing new relief tanks, a few other new fixtures, and a new pressure reduction valve, as our old one had failed, leaving our home plumbing to deal with water pressure intended to distribute water over several square miles. And at the end of it all, only one radiator out of three on that floor actually gets hot, and the other two just warm up a bit, so we never even completely solved the original problem. Joy.

Yet another reason nobody in their right fucking mind should ever use Uplay. I got Blacklist with my graphics card. I installed it. I got an SSD so I copied Blacklist over to it, installed uplay, tried to launch, and it won't. So I check for registry entries, update them, try to launch, and it won't. So I check uplay for something akin to "verify integrity" on Steam. Doesn't exist. Fucking dumbasses at Ubisoft want me to download 20GB that's already sitting on my hard drive.

I had a pretty hard time transferring Black Flag over from one system to another, but here's what I did:

Downloaded it on my work PC. Canceled the install, and located the downloaded copy. (typically in uplay\cache\game but this seems to really vary per game).

Copy everything from that folder, and take note of where it downloaded. So this is basically where you are too. On the PC you want to play it from, put it in the exact same location, then try to run the game. Most likely it won't do it, or instead will just start downloading again.

Exit out of Uplay, and now copy the entire game folder into Uplay\games. Once I did that, the "download" button changed into a "play game" button when I restarted Uplay. It still won't launch the game, because it's missing all the registry entries, but it will go into an "installing" phase which takes a few minutes, after which I was able to play.

Warning: Normally Uplay deletes the download folder after it's installed it. It's a completely retarded system, because it downloads the game in exactly the same format and setup as the actually installed game, but they seem to think that putting it in one folder and then copying it to another is smart coding, for some reason. (They're French, what can you really expect? ) After it has installed, it will delete the downloaded copy.

Because of the way this procedure above works, it doesn't get deleted. Not a huge deal, but the first time you want to download a patch for the game, it goes right back into wanting to download the entire game. This happened to me in Black Flag, and it was seriously annoying. I finally figured out that if you delete the game from the download folder, it'll install the patch normally (and only download the patch data.)

I agree that it's a fucking terrible, terrible application. It's worse than Origin, and that's really saying a lot. But at least you CAN move stuff over with some finnicky bullshit, and so far I've been unable to transfer anything between PCs with that horseshit EA client.
