Next Car Game Kickstarter Axed; Preorder Sneak Peek Released

Bugbear Entertainment announces they have killed off the Kickstarter for Next Car Game, saying though it "attracted tremendous enthusiasm," it was not going to hit its $350K goal, as it was cancelled a bit short of the $82K mark. Noting that "Finns are not used to giving up so easily," they announce they are proceeding with a preorder campaign to support the demolition derby game's continued development, and they are offering a playable "technology sneak peek" from the game to all those who preorder. Here's word:
The sneak peek features a playground that we use internally to test various features various like car damage and environment destruction. The best thing about it is that you will get a chance to have fun and wreak havoc with an amazing 24 cars!

In the full game the action will take place on many locations, including a number of race tracks and derby arenas. We're also going to improve the gameplay and technology on many fronts such as car damage and handling, and our Early Access customers will get a chance to experience these improvements first-hand during the Early Access phase!

There is some rabid interest in the game from a small group of people. The pre-orders started before it appeared in Kickstarter, and the game is coming out whether they got some arbitrary amount of money from Kickstarter or not, as it seems to be mostly finished from what's been posted by the developer. I think Kickstarter just provided a more visible way of getting pre-orders when compared to their website.

I pre-ordered the game before it went on Kickstarter, so I've been playing the tech demo. It's fun: very nice detailed deformation, decent arcade handling and physics. Check out my gameplay video. Personally, I'm really looking forward to the beta.

Yeah, but you could say that about any game in development. There will always be the group of hardcore fans who for the life of them can't figure out why people aren't signing over their first born for said game.

I'm interested in it, but I've got enough money tied to games that are still in the development pipeline that I'm not giving any more until some of that gets cleared up.

I pre-ordered after seeing just a little of the tech demo. stupid excited for this game, I loved Ultimate Carnage and this is very much going to become the next step from that.

Also, I think it'd be a hoot if they put a level with roller-coastery sections like this into the game. UC never had any craziness like it, it'd be like trackmania with collisions. Even if they take that exact tech demo level and allow people to hop into it in multiplayer, I could easily spend an hour or more setting up ridiculous things for us to attempt. It'd be dead easy for them to do, even.

Not a fan of Flatout, but was looking forward to this. Sounds like it's coming out regardless, hopefully in the developer's vision without publisher's interference.

Cool, thanks for the video link. It's a great tech demo, apart from the car surviving everything

I supported the Kickstarter, but now that it's canned I guess I'll go ahead and pre-order on the site

The problem is they just aren't doing anything that hasn't been done better by other developers before them.

Ironically enough Ridge racer unbounded has a great track editor trapped in a shitty console racer. If they fixed up the game mechanics of the cars in RR unbounded and made a better track editor, along the lines of trackmania it could be a decent racer.

Errr... So you cancel the Kickstarter because it wasn't going to make it, yet now you want people to pre-order so they are DEFINITELY out of their money even if you never get enough money together to make the new game?

Okay. Let me get my credit card...

I was interested but wanted to see more just what kind of "car game" they were going to do specifically.

Yeah, I know, right? I'm sure this'll go over even better than their KS. Pfft.

I enjoyed the Flatout games a lot, I'm just as surprised. I'm sure they'll still work on getting this out regardless.

Never played any of their games, but thought BB had a serious following. So I was surprised this didn't catch on...
