John Carmack Leaves id Software

John Carmack has parted ways with id Software, a move that was once inconceivable when he was part owner of the Mesquite-based developer, but had become possible when Bethesda Softworks parent Zenimax bought id in 2009, and perhaps inevitable when Carmack joined Oculus Rift over the summer. John's twitter feed has his comment (thanks Paul): "I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn't work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging." IGN has id's statement: "John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio," id's studio director Tim Willits told IGN. "John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well." John later tweeted once more about this: "If they don't want me to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, we'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days. :-)"

Says someone who didn't grow up on games using his technology.

Actually, you probably did. You just don't know it.

Kinda suspected it coming when he joined Oculus Rift. My impression was it seemed like a huge distraction from his job at the time, and maybe things had changed so much in the lands of id that he was looking for different grassy meadows to roam in.

Seems like JC checked out years ago. Probably around 2009 with the purchase. Hope he's happy doing the new stuff.

What's pretty scary? This dog eat dog game designer world out there where even games that do moderately well are laid off after the completion of a project. I don't how cutthroat Zenimax would be with id, but a series of lukewarm projects may not blow over well with the suits.
Love thy wookie.

Sad day in a way. Nevertheless good luck to him. iD died when they sold to Zenimax.

End of one era, beginning of another? I hope he can get his mojo back and return to his former glory in the VR space. Keen, Wolfie, DOOM, Quake... lotta good times. I ain't givin' up on him yet. But I ain't playin' RAGE either, even if it's free.

I think John has a lot more to give to the gaming community, and the Oculus Rift seems to be a great outlet for his passion

I always felt that John made great technology for a very average game company. Imagine if John worked for Valve or Blizzard 15 years ago, the world would have been a better place.

That is a knee-jerk ignorant comment. John Carmack essentially pioneered 3D/FPS gaming as we know it today, and was very adamant about sharing his code/technology for everyone to build upon…and wow, look where FPS gaming is today. So, show some respect!

I’m excited to see his work and influence with Oculus Rift.
