New NVIDIA GeForce Drivers add ShadowPlay Beta

The GeForce website offers new WHQL-certified GeForce 331.82 Windows drivers, which they say are optimized for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. These offer additional performance boosts, as well as an updated beta of NVIDIA's ShadowPlay that can record gameplay with minimal impact on GTX 600 and 700 series GPUs, saying the CPU requirement for this has now been removed. Here's word:
The new GeForce 331.82 WHQL driver is now available to download. An essential update for all GeForce GTX users, 331.82 WHQL is the Game Ready driver for Assassin's Creed IV and Need For Speed Rivals, giving you a great gaming experience from day one with the latest driver tweaks and performance optimizations. In addition to a multitude of performance optimizations in a variety of games, 331.82 WHQL also introduces major 3840x2160 4K Gaming optimizations, giving up you up to 50% faster framerates in Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, and Metro: Last Light when playing at the demanding resolution.

GeForce 331.82 WHQL also sees the introduction of GeForce Experience 1.7.1, which includes the long-awaited ShadowPlay Beta, an innovative gameplay recording tool that can constantly record the action with a minimal performance impact thanks to the H.264 encoder built into GeForce GTX 600 and 700 Series GPUs. With GeForce Experience 1.7.1, ShadowPlay CPU requirements have been removed, opening ShadowPlay up to all GeForce GTX 600 and 700 Series users.

Maybe it's time to upgrade from that ancient tech.

At the moment, the only thing i wish my 460's had was more vram as in a few games (skyrim /w tons of graphics mods) it hits the 1gb mark. That aside there's nothing i cant run with my 460's in SLI mode and get 50+ fps in, also they are overclocking champs. One 460 can attain almost 480 like performance, which honestly isnt that far off from a 670 in performance.

I have a GTX 670 and the new drivers are just a pain. This last one takes the cake and it would not display anything once I turned on Shadowplay. On reboot various things would crash or complain about some nv* dll stopped working etc. It really is beta. I just uninstalled and went back to couple of versions back and all is well.

I don't use sleep mode because I just leave the machine on all the time. It's one of several in a rack and it's just easier to do so.

I haven't tried these drivers yet, but when I tried Shadowplay when it came out a few weeks back, it seemed to work great, but it does have shortcomings. You can't choose your resolution - it's 1080p or GTFO. Which isn't necessarily a drawback, unless you're running a 16:10 resolution - so it will stretch your image to fit. Makes it useless on my 1680x1050 res monitor. There is a lot of call for that in the NVIDIA forums to change though, so I'll be surprised it NVIDIA don't implement that along the way.

Also seen a lot of people complaining that GeForce Experience isn't installing too, so I guess they'll have to fix that asap.

Had trouble setting this up for someone today, it looks like it might require Fullscreen mode for some configurations as once we set that on the game we wanted to get footy of it worked and the little grey icon appears once in game.

Weird, i'm running 331.58 on my gtx 460's without a problem.

No, Hibernate turns the PC off, in sleep mode RAM and several more components are powered.

Not at all. That's for laptops solely.

I'll give that a shot.

Thanks guys.

Sleep Mode is the mode that truly turns your PC off (hybernate?), right? I use it allll the time. My PC starts up in literally 2 seconds this way. Freaking love it. Maybe it only works if you have an SSD I dunno.

Change the adaptive status? I think I've tried that too. My problem is that if I don't slightly underclock my gtx680, at some point during a game the screen locks up, goes black and then goes back to windows saying the video driver crashed. Bah!

dj LiTh,
Actually no. The driver most likely uses UDMA which would transfer data directly from the H.264 encoder to a SATA device. The SATA device probably has a single-chunk file into which the UDMA writes. In other words, no CPU interrupts, no disk thrash, low overhead. Torrents use the same concept in that they allocate the maximum contiguous size ahead of time and just keep writing within their sandbox, filely speaking.

I hope this helps!

Cool! Thanks for that, so its going to the RAM or VRAM for short term storage? If its the VRAM i could see that possibly becoming a problem for too long a video and big textured game (skyrim /w tons of 4k textures mods for example), if its ram then thats pretty damn sweet.

Any links to benchmarks about that FIFTY PERCENT perf increase in 4k yet? Cause that would like... Totally trash the r9 290 and X results.

I can't answer since I don't have your system, but I have had no issues with 660 or 760 with the past couple. There was one beta driver several months back now that gave me issues. I haven't load these yet.

Do you use sleep mode at all?

Make sure that the driver is set to "maximum performance" rather than "adaptive" in the nvidia control panel.

fixed all my issues.

Well, anything after 314 is a non-event for my 680 SLI setup surround. Games just start to a black screen, geforce experience keeps failing updates, manually cleaning and reinstalling the 331 driver results in the same problem.

Even fucking Terraria crashes if it's not windowed (and State of Decay hard locks the system).

314, everything works fine...

New "features" are fine but not at the expense of core driver stability.

Using the "Save last X minutes of footage" feature as a tool for work now... so easy! Now I just need to upgrade the 580 at home so I can record the I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT JUST HAPPENED moments that seem to occur in ARMA 3 once or twice a session.
