I can see the merits of replacing the PS4 HD, but I think 500GB is a good starting number.

I have a TB mechanical drive on my PC and it hovers between 400GB and 600GB, depending on what games I have installed (~45 titles.) If could pare that down a bit, a 500GB SSD would certainly be feasible.

Again, 500GB isn't amazing, but I don't think it's terrible either.
If we're talking about mechanical, 1TB drives are like $40.

I don't need to have 15 games installed at once. Generally I'll focus on 2-3 at a given time. For right now at least (baring any multi disc games, which seems near impossible) 500 gig is more than enough for me.

I guess a better description is "very warm." It's been running fine without any issues, but after three straight hours of AC:BC, I felt the system and it was okay to touch, but I likely wouldn't want to leave my hand there for more than a minute or so. If anything, it reminded me of how warm the original 20GB 360s would get.

The gamepad light doesn't do much, but it will change colors now and then depending on what you are doing with the system or with the game. I know it glows orange while charging and some upcoming games are said to use it in a minimal fashion (white light for when you are not in shadows, red light for when your health is low, etc.)

My wife was fiddling around with the DC Comics game yesterday and I noticed it used two or three different colors.

I finally got the phone app to work and it's only useful for limited circumstances, but I definitely prefer inputting account information via my phone than with the gamepad.
Speaking of the gamepad, did I mention how much I love it?
Wondering if The Witness will be my next PS4 game,

He is probably contrasting the next gen game size requirements with the 500GB hard drive. If you buy 3-5 games a year you will chew through it fast since games require full installation for caching purposes.

That's odd...mine runs fine with the drive it came with, as does upwards of a million others.

Good job Sony, I'm sure everyone will enjoy their sub-par PC called the PS4...

Publishers would be fools not to port a bunch of PC games to either console, you just lock off the graphic options menu and make sure controller input is the only way to play the game.

Sony even allows mouse and keyboard on their console so you could even leave that in it seems.

War thunder mouse and keyboard on PS4

So, we have a console that basically requires a Hard Drive upgrade, potentially getting PC ports with diminished graphics, that supports a mouse and keyboard.

The advantages of gaming on a console instead of a PC are diminishing fast.

Yeah, that light is pretty bright. I wonder if turning it off while in a game would help battery life at all. It doesn't really need to be on unless you have the camera and play a game that uses it.

Good, I'm not the only one that thought that. Granted, I am used to looking down on most people IRL, but I've never played a FPS before that made me feel so short. It's like Killzone - Dwarvish Assassin!

Between me and the grandkids, my ps4 has been on constantly since I brought it home.. I have had no problems at all. I haven't noticed any heat, but I have had no reason to check it. Every game or app has run flawlessly ,,the update auto downloaded in about one minute. The controller battery life is really short compared to the old ones ,but that must be the light...but the ps4 charges the controller when In standby mode..despite it's poor reviews, the kids love contrast...killzone is kind of meh,,,but resogun rocks much ass.

My wife will take full blame for AC:BF.
However, the PS4 runs really hot - while playing AC: BF, it was hot to the touch and it was in a cool area without any constricting airflow.

Warm to touch or hot to touch? Mine is warm after about an hour of playing the most graphically intensive game on the console but that's not exactly unexpected. It doesn't affect the performance at all and the system throttles itself if the thermals ever get too high. If yours is hot to the touch I would return it. I think for the noise output the thermals are more than acceptable, power use is a bit higher than I'd like compared to my PS3 Slim but whatever.

On a completely different note, the analysis of why the xbox failed in Japan is interesting and amusing.

Why is it amusing? Because fast-forward to the PS3/360 generation. All those rock star Japanese developers, while still big in Japan, can't make many waves in the international market any more. They're admitting that they never evolved with the rest of the market, because they thought Japan *was* the market, and now JRPGs are to put it politely more or less niche.

And I guess they're trying to learn, but they are ice-skating uphill. My friend, who was a Final Fantasy 11 addict (and I use that term intentionally, he spend 3 YEARS inside the game, there was a timer, I saw it) burned out on FF14 in like 2 months and went back to Minecraft. Final Fantasy games aside, I'm bored to shit with the tropes of JRPGs, the mechanics are either usually solid but ancient and repetitive or different and kind of broken.

Anyway, it's funny that so much seemed to ride on the XBox getting into Japan and now it's not nearly as important it seems like.

Yeah, I went ahead and grabbed it. The $10 credit to the PS store (included in the PS4 box) knocked a little off the cost, so that was nice. And I'd rather have peace of mind, knowing that if anything goes wrong between now and November 2016, I'm covered.

Thanks for the input, guys!

Dude that's what *most* launch cycles look like for the first 6 months or so. You get a couple blockbuster games and the rest are up-cycled ports.

Additionally, there are reports of some systems already having some issues and I personally had bad experiences with the last generation of systems (2x PS3s and 4x 360s.)

For $60, coverage through 3 years seems like a no brainer at this point.

On a random note, the PS4 controller is a re-mapped PS3 controller for the most part with a couple of extra buttons. This means that if your device can read a PS3 controller, it can read a PS4 one.

Plugged a PS4 controller into my Nexus 10, kicked up the ePSXe emulator and went to re-map the keys (just in case). It declared it was a full PS3 DS controller, but remapping keys had a few odd results. The "Share" button is seen as the controllers L1 key, "Start" is R2, L1 on the controller is seen as L2, and the L-Trigger is a whole new key that isn't mapped to anything on the PS3 controller (I think it was called "Button 17"?), the I think the rest were fine. I know D-Pad and joysticks were fine, maybe the X,O, Circle and Square where in different locations but all there.

My tablet even recognized the touchpad button, not the touchpad itself though. So 1 extra button on the controller (I made it a "Save State" button myself).

Only odd note, at least for ePSXe was the L2 and R2 on the controller would have a full second of lag, had to go into mapping Player 1, Player 1 map axis, and change the L2 Stick and R2 Stick from whatever it's default is to Native. Then it was fine again.

Not bad in this horrible economy. I am waiting for PS4Gen2 and/or better games. I am getting XboxOne at day one though with Killer Instinct! Woot! Didn't you guys love the MK1, MK2, and KI arcade days? Gather with others to bust some faces!? Play for a long time on just one quarter?

As far as the damaged consoles are concerned, people report DOA computer parts all of time. If you are going to use the computer argument against consoles, you also have to live with the other side of the example as well.

That's like every other console launch. No one cares though, most people only buy a few games at a time. The Wii U got creamed because it's ancient hardware with a gaudy controller that didn't have any system selling software combined with marketplace confusion and poor advertising. It wasn't any one thing that sunk the Wii U, it was a combination of factors and they still haven't managed to turn it around either.

Sony has some of the strongest producing first party studios in the world with several titles planned in year one, a plethora of indie games coming thanks to actively courting them and they have strong third party support thanks to having hardware that can run modern software.
