FTL: Faster Than Light Expansion Next Year

A free expansion is in the works for FTL: Faster Than Light which will be released for the throwback space strategy game next year along with a new version of the game that will work on iPads and iPad. The FTL: Faster Than Light website offers this trailer and the following details:
We’ve been working hard over the summer and are excited to finally officially announce a free expansion, FTL: Advanced Edition! FTL: AE is a huge content addition that includes new weapons, drones, augments, systems, enemies, and more. Here are some details on just a few of the additions visible in the trailer:

  • Mind Control System: Temporarily turn enemies into allies. Force a boarder to repair the damage they just did, or have the enemy pilot sabotage their own helm.
  • Hacking System: Lockdown and disrupt enemy systems. Unique effects for each system, ranging from forcing a teleporter remove boarders to making the medbay damage instead of heal.
  • New Sector and Events: Our writer Tom Jubert has returned along with special guest writer Chris Avellone (of Planescape fame), who managed to find some time for us between his work on Project Eternity and Wasteland 2. They’ve been helping us add a new sector and scatter new events throughout the rest of the game.
  • New Weapons and Effects: Many new weapons that take advantage of new mechanics: overcharging to increase the number of volleys, stun effects to freeze crew, and area effect targeting, to name a few.
  • And more systems, drones, augments, enemy ships, enemy layouts, and hostile environments. All of which we’ll be sure to talk about more in the coming weeks!

In addition to new content, we’ve continued to polish FTL and add some of the most requested small features. As a few examples: you’ll be able to save your crew positions and send them back to battle-stations, save and quit during combat, and find more items for purchase in stores.

For the purists out there, FTL vanilla will still be available. All of the new content can be disabled from within the hangar before starting a new game.

Interesting, especially since it'll be free. I'll try FTL again when this is released.

I played FTL for a bit, but it just isn't a "fun" game to me. It reminds me a lot of Oregon Trail; depressing, somewhat dependent on random events, and ultimately if you win you don't feel a great sense of satisfaction, just a flat sense of recognition of some lucky rolls. Some of the best sessions, gameplay wise by me, still resulted in losses because of some random nonsense. Conversely I won a few times after making horrible mistakes. Aggravating.

At least for me.

Strange comment, given your moniker.

I'm really looking forward to this. I have a few dozen hours into FTL, and will gladly go back to play new races and try new strategies.

FTL is one of my favorite games. Can't wait for this update. Especially nice that it's free. I hope these guys go on to make more cool games.

Been playing a lot of Rimworld lately. It has a very FTL survival vibe to it.

Nice of them to make it free. The one thing I would have liked to see added, but wasn't, is a never ending game mode. Would be nice instead of just working your way to the boss fight and end game, to instead be able to move around the maps freely without the pursuit.

There is a mod that does this. It's called Infinite Space

Free expansion? Awesome. Version for iPad? Interesting. I just got rid of my iPad but my wife still has hers, so I might give it a shot since it seems like a game that would translate well to a tablet. If it will run on 1st gen iPads that is.

Most of all I would like an easy mode that is actually "easy". I might have slowed down or lost a step when it comes to gaming but even so I am a seasoned enough gamer I think that I should not find "easy" mode to be punishingly difficult (or maybe I just suck that much). Other than that this game is brilliant.

Easy in the game means more scrap for upgrades, that's it. You've still got to be smart and budget out upgrades properly. It does make the game far easier, especially with the "extra scrap arm" or whatever it's called.

I seem to recall there being an update that addressed this issue. Far after it should have been fixed of course, but it silently happened.

"MoreLuckThanSkill" is just to make people feel better when they lose, it's all skill.

X-Com Enemy Within in a few minutes(? Midnight EST right?), hopefully it's nowhere near as buggy as BF4 has been.

If you think FTL was all about luck...you never mastered the game. There is a luck component for sure, but for people who mastered the game, they can win regularly.

I feel very comfortable in the mechanics of FTL, and on normal I win about half the time. I've never won on hard, although admittedly I've only tried a few times. The enemy ship strength ramps up much more quickly on hard than normal. It's just not pleasant to bang my head against the wall that much.

Like the previous poster, it felt so great the first time I won, and I still get a good sense of accomplishment beating the end boss. Those guys really zeroed in on providing a satisfying experience. There is a bit of luck (getting the right weapons and upgrades is key) but knowing how to use what you get effectively is much more important.

"save and quit during combat"

Finally! Making a hacked save system for this unforgiving game was an inelegant solution.
