Australian Ratings Reconsidered for 12 Games

The Australian Classification Review Board announces the ratings of a dozen games are being reevaluated at the request of the South Australian Attorney General. The 12 games all initially received MA15+ ratings, which were the most mature rating offered at the times of their releases, and the implication is that they are now considering raising the ratings on some or all of them to the new R18+ rating, which would further restrict their sales (thanks GameSpot). Here are the games in question:

  • Alien Rage
  • Borderlands 2 Expansion Packs
  • Company of Heroes 2
  • Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut
  • Deadpool
  • Fuse
  • Gears of War: Judgment
  • God Mode
  • Killer is Dead
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist
  • The Walking Dead
  • The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

So do a lot of Australian gamers torrent stuff so they can play games?

Only those unfortunate saps that are on centrelink (government welfare).

Hooray for nanny states and the government dictating what you can or can't buy, have, watch, etc.

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is known as the "city of churches".

I guess John Rau doesn't realise that this horse has already bolted.

And yet Manhunt remains at MA15+. I'll never understand Australian thinking.

I'm pretty sure that Manhunt is RC.

Yeah. I don't remember for sure on the original, but Manhunt 2 was definitely RC.

So, what are the restrictions on R18+ games?

Sale is restricted to 18 years or older. Not a big deal.
Don't they have to be kept out of view behind the shelves too, so that minors can't see them?
