Out of the Blue

I've been having trouble with one of the monitors in my dual-monitor setup for a while: I spent some time on the phone recently with a tech support guy who helped confirm that the monitor's flaky behavior in resuming from power-saving mode was because it was going bad, probably one of those capacitors that cause us so much joy and pain. This morning I couldn't get the bad monitor to come on, and for a while had switched everything to one monitor, but I tried it again in a bit and coaxed into coming on, though the writing is clearly on the wall here. I'm not really eager to go further over the hardware budget, but the brief period working in a single monitor shows me how badly I have spoiled myself with the 3840x1200 pixels of screen real estate I use, and it would be quite an adjustment going back, and it's only a matter of time before this thing stops working altogether, so I have to start planning for that.

Don't know what type/brand of monitor you are dealing with, but you might consider checking out the capacitor kits sold by lcdalternatives.com. I was able to repair a non-working monitor for a relative using a kit from them. I do not consider myself a techno-soldering whiz but by watching the videos, I felt I could do it, and did it.

The rivalry between Maverick and Iceman would seem particularly cruel, considering Tom Cruise is still Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer now resembles an unbaked croissant.

Well, you can get a 1920x1200 monitor for as little as $200, so it shouldn't break the bank if you can't fix it. You live in a frickin' tower, after all.

NVIDIA dropped prices on the 780 and 770 today, to $499 and $329 respectively. As expected (though rather expeditiously), they've effectively neutralized AMD's new releases. So the 290X is 10% faster than the 780? Then you will pay 10% more. Identical bang for your buck, if you ignore that the thermal performance disparity is still there. Especially since they're not downgrading the cooler on the 780 despite the $150 cut.

Also, the 780 Ti will be coming out in a week, and will be sold for $699. They waited to see what the 290X would offer before announcing as such, so that price suggests it will be significantly faster. We shall see.

surprise surprise.

Wow, you mean stubbornly making a game that all the fans said they didn't want to play wasn't likely to pan out? WHODATHUNKIT?!

Anyway, this will turn into a shitty SP game in about 9 months, just so EA can do a quick cash-in.

I wouldn't want to do web design with a TN panel, I'd suggest avoiding all 'gamer' monitors and instead get an IPS panel based monitor. Dell makes very affordable ones that also double as decent gaming monitors.

If you're pretty sure that it's a flaky capacitor just find a local shop, or do the repair yourself. I had a old LG monitor that did the same thing, pulling it apart and finding the bad one was simple. Once that was done, heading down to the local electronics store and buying a replacement cap and soldering it in was all it took.

Pretty much if you know how to use a multimeter, this is a "home repair" item. Though this and this may help.

I initially read that as "This Guy Photoshopped Every Stage Of His Wife's Cancer" and thought 'Well that is in really bad taste.' but no.

He had plans to tear my heart out instead.

Made me cry. Especially seeing as she wasn't much older than me. And she died about 2-3 weeks after my father died of cancer.

One of the first choices you make as President in Saint's Row 4 was to either end world hunger, or exterminate cancer. I wish it was that simple...
