Galactic Civilizations III Announced for 64-bit PCs

Stardock announces Galactic Civilizations III, saying the next installment in the highly regarded space strategy series will be coming exclusively to 64-bit PCs. No release date is specified, but the Galactic Civilizations III website is offering a Founder's Edition that includes beta access and a $10.00 discount or a Founder's Elite Edition that includes alpha access, though the lack of features and additional bugs carry a hefty premium, as at US$99.99 it is twice the game's eventual retail price. This trailer celebrates the news, and speaking of celebrations, Stardock notes this announcement comes as they celebrate their 20th anniversary, which is also being commemorated by a Steam sale. Here's word on the game and how it will leverage 64-bit PCs:
Stardock announced the third installment of its award-winning PC strategy game series today as the company celebrates its 20th anniversary: Galactic Civilizations III, the long-awaited next chapter in one of the highest-rated strategy franchises of all time. Coming exclusively to 64-bit PCs, Galactic Civilizations III stays true to its core gameplay while adding new features including multiplayer, political intrigue, vastly improved visuals and much more.

"The move to 64-bit architecture heralds a new era of game development at Stardock," said Derek Paxton, vice president of Stardock Entertainment. "The technology allows players to experience a level of graphical detail and on-screen activity unprecedented in large-scale strategy PC games. It dramatically increases the size and scope of the maps, and opens the door for modders to add a virtually unlimited amount of new content to the game."

Galactic Civilizations casts the player as the all-powerful leader of a spacefaring civilization that must explore, expand and colonize new worlds across the galaxy. Dominating rival alien species through technological, economic, political and military prowess tests players’ cultural, ideological, and diplomatic skills as they pursue victory via peaceful or belligerent means.

Galactic Civilizations III gives players far more detail in the textures, models, and overall look of everything from the planets they colonize to the fleets they command. New interstellar terrain elements on the hex-based map like black holes and mysterious Precursor relics change the way players explore the galaxy. A completely overhauled ship builder puts nearly every element of starship design in players’ hands, while the new resource system creates fresh opportunities to explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate.

Yeah, GC2 was good but not nearly as good as MOO 1 or 2. Could be really good though if they fix some of the bland features (bland tech, cookie cutter weapons and defense, no control over combat and dry races). Hopefully they will put their effory into that.

Bleh, GalCiv II wasn't anything stellar, even after I modded it myself to my tastes...

MoO on the other hand.

Give me MoO 4, or give me death!

Galactic Civ II did not even come close to what Master of Orion II had, even III was better IMO. Going to wait and see, but I don't think Stardock can write a good space strategy game.

This was exactly what I wanted to say. (Apart from MOO3 being good, erm no it was not) I never got into Gal Civ II because it felt and played like a weaksauce MOOII. I hope this is going to be better.

I loved the previous galciv, and I'm sure this one will be good as well.

They are charging $100 for alpha because they saw what happened with planetary annihilation and various kickstarters and want to replicate it.
If they aren't going to run an actual kickstarter, IMHO they need to get it into steam early access to get the kinda sales that planetary annihilation did. And they may well plan that seeing as they've mentioned in the footnotes of the purchase page that the game is going to be delivered on steam.

A little rich for my blood personally, until I see more.

Note: They are only charging $40 to get it and have beta access which is more what I think I'll do.

BUT when have they earned this kind of trust? Everything from Stardock has been a mess for what 7 years!

In 7 years we got two great Galciv2 expansions and the entirety of the SOASE franchise. Good enough for me.

Edit: For anyone who has never played Galciv I encourage you to read these two gameplay diaries written by Tom Francis, the guy who also made the excellent Gunpoint. They give you a good insight to the game and are wonderfully hilarious to read.

If I had to guess, I'd say that he's referring to the general failure of Demigod and the whole Elemental debacle. Oh, and the whole Brad Wardell sexual harrassment / victim lawsuit data deletion thing. But they never released "Misogyny, Corporate espionage, mansplanation and Lawsuit Simulator 2000". It didn't test well.

To be fair, something folks need to keep in mind is that both Demigod and SOASE were only published by Stardock, not developed by them (I think. One was GpG and the other was Ironclad, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.) GalCiv 2 was the best 4x space game since MOO 2, and if it weren't for Wardell's douchebaggery keeping me from giving him my money I'd be all over GalCiv 3.

Overall, I'm just glad to see the genre evolving and regaining popularity.

If you're referring to the whole Fallen Enchantress debacle, then I can say that most of those that play GC2 didn't bother with it. It's a strat game, sure, but most GC2 players are 4x freaks. And the support Stardock gave for GC2 during it's run, including the mod community, more than makes up for any mess they had with another game from another genre...

Fallen is a 4x game, same genre just a fantasy setting. Thats what has me personally worried as i absolutely loved GalCiv2 and its expansions but i couldnt stand Fallen Enchantress.

They're charging $100 to guarantee that only the true fanatics buy it before release. Those fans will then have to justify to themselves as well as to their friends that it was worth every penny, assuring plenty of pre-release positive buzz. It's a win-win for them.

Also with that road record they are charging $100????? Wow they must think they are better than Blizzard.

Dude, not like it's hoarse armoar...

If you don't want to pay $100, then don't. Those of us that absolutely LOVE the series will as a sign to Stardock that, yes, we want more, please! Simple as that...

Are there still OEMs installing 32-bit Windows on machines with 64-bit CPUs? I know we have some 32-bit users, and I don't know of any 32-bit CPUs that would run our game halfway acceptably.

Okay, I'm kidding.

Looks very interesting, hope they get the gameplay just right. I also haven't felt a recapturing of the magic of MoO 1/2 in any game just yet either, although some have come close.

Man, on one hand im hyped as fuck. New GalCiv! Then I remember how terrible fallen enchantress is even after the expansions and all the patches and I start to lose hope. Here's hoping the guy that did fall from heaven is a big part of the design process rather then the guy from civ5.
