Out of the Blue

Today is the anniversary of this site moving to its own domain back in 1996, making for 17 years of fun and games here. I try to avoid thinking whenever possible, but this has me thinking about the future of things here and how to improve things going forward. Of course I try to avoid doing things like that too, so nothing may come of this, but I have been known to surprise myself. In the meantime, here's a heartfelt thanks for all the support over all these years.

I thought World War Z was pretty mediocre, it's biggest sin was wasting great source material that the book provided. They missed so many opportunities with things like the Battle of Yonkers and the Redeker Plan. No clue how that guy keeps getting work in Hollywood, they should have gone with the original JMS screenplay. Zombies are the latest pop culture fad, you know it's mainstream when they're making mass market stuff out of them.

I don't even remember the last Indiana Jones film so I'm sure it was forgettable and bad.

Ridley Scott is past prime, Prometheus was concerning but doing a sequel to Blade Runner is just such a bad idea on so many levels.
Playing: Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Sea of Stars

I dunno - a new Blade Runner with a Harrison Ford cameo wouldn't be so bad, though it's doubtful a new movie would come near the genius of the first. But this probably means they want him to be star, which I hate. If the last "Indiana Jones" movie taught us anything, it's that Ford's action movie days are long behind him.

For me, Ford wasn't the problem with Crystal Skull - it was the script and Lucas' fingerprints (caddyshack gopher, giant rubber snake, nuke the fridge, oh look! Aliens!, etc etc)...

After Prometheus, I'm more worried about Scott. At least this time, it's supposed to be an actual sequel, and not "in the same universe, kinda sorta, maybe" like Prometheus was. Granted, that could easily change tomorrow...

Yeah, I have to wonder if Scott's best days are behind him. He hasn't done anything compelling in years. Robin Hood was boring, Prometheus was deeply flawed, and even though most of that is on Lindelof, I hold Scott responsible for not seeing it and reigning it in. And speaking of Lindelof, how does this guy keep getting work? Everything he does has massive script problems: Cowboys & Aliens, Prometheus, ST: Into Darkness. I haven't seen WWZ yet, so I'll have to withhold judgement on that one, but the rest, jeez.

I heard that he sucks dick like a pro....(Lindelof)

No seriously, my semi-literate great uncle could come up with a better script....sheesh.
I have a nifty blue line!

I really enjoyed it.

I really wish I could understand what people see in it but most of the time when I ask people just say "it was fun" and nothing else. Brad Pitt plays a poorly emotive everyman insert who is somehow adaptable to every situation he faces, tromps around the globe to a bunch of set pieces to essentially accomplish nothing but a Pepsi product placement until the last minute. There are essentially no other characters, I struggle to even remember a single name of another character outside of the lead. The virus makes no sense at all, turning people into flying monsters with an incubation time of seconds and yet somehow they conveniently change from intelligent/fast to dumb/slow whenever the plot requires it. I couldn't even turn off my brain and just enjoy the spectacle because its a PG-13 film where everything happens offscreen between dizzying shakeycam jumpshots.

I'm not a big zombie movie buff and I didn't particularly care for the Max Brooks novels but I can't imagine what people saw in this, it seems to combine all of the worst aspects of several genres.

I actually thought Crystal Skull would have been fine if they hadn't included Shia Lebeouf and found a decent script. Harrison Ford did alright with the role despite his age. The fridge thing at the beginning is vintage Indiana Jones, no clue why that offended so many people.

Forget the source material, it's just a bad movie designed to coast on pure spectacle. There are essentially no real characters or meaningful exposition. Not really difficult to see why that production was so troubled, it feels like it switched scripts and direction 3-4 times. It's a litmus test for people I know these days, if they just loved WWZ for the shiny CGI and 'tension' then I know I can tune them out when they start talking about movies.

I really enjoyed it. See ya...

WWZ sucks, thoughtless action setpiece vehicle. Forget the source material, it's just a bad movie designed to coast on pure spectacle. Lindelof keeps getting work because he makes the perfect content for the modern american viewer. All flash, tons of cliches, no substance, don't think too hard when its over.

So Blue, how about a kickstarter for T-shirts?

That's an interesting idea. Or like a gofundme, where for every $15-$20 you put in, you get a shirt, and if you want more, you just pledge more...

Still comes down to taxes he has to pay.......kinda sucks.

Not to mention all the work of designing, order, packing, and shipping untold thousands of said t-shirts. As if poor Blue doesn't do enough work already...

ALTHOUGH, a site like this will do most of the work for you.
