BioShock 2 Removes GFWL; Joins Steam

Steam News announces that BioShock 2 is now available on Steam as a bundle with all its available multiplayer DLC and the single-player Protector Trials pack, with the shooter sequel collection carrying a 50% discount for the next few days. They state a new update has removed the reviled Games for Windows LIVE service from the game, and that previous owners of the game are entitled to a complimentary Steam key. Here's a BioShock 2 Steamworks Update FAQ and here's word:
In August, the Games For Windows LIVE service marketplace closed and some of you wondered what would happen to BioShock 2 on PC. We remain committed to supporting BioShock 2 on PC and are excited to announce that starting today the game is available via Steam. Not only that, but the Steam version of BioShock 2 includes all available multiplayer downloadable content, as well as the single player “Protector Trials” DLC!

With the help of our friends at Digital Extremes, BioShock 2 on Steam fully supports popular features of the platform, including controller compatibility, Steam achievements, and Big Picture mode. Matchmaking is easier than ever now, allowing you to search for “any game,” as opposed to having to select your game mode. Leveling up is also quicker and easier, as we’ve fine-tuned the multiplayer experience to be better than ever.

If you have already purchased BioShock 2 through a different digital partner, we’ve got you covered. Simply take the same game activation key you already own and “activate” it within Steam. Doing this will grant you access to BioShock 2, all of its multiplayer and Protector Trials DLC, as well as Minerva’s Den – the single player story-driven add-on that includes new weapons, enemies, and plasmids!

It's not almost like. It's EXACTLY like that.

GFWL is the biggest F*ckup to ever come out of Redmond (I might need a few days to parse through the data of bad Microsoft moves to confirm this). It is amazing that a company so large and with so many talented people can get something so wrong.

Its almost like they were sabotaging the PC to bolster the Xbox. I find it truly amazing and under examined. Steam is making money hand over fist and Microsoft could have had a piece of that pie had they done things right.

It amazes me that they can not only stay in business, but make healthy profits year after year with some of the colossal screw ups they have made (Windows Vista (arguable maybe, but certainly not ready when it came out), Windows RT, GFWL, The Kin phone) and that is just over the past 7-8 years.

Go in a corner and die Microsoft. Your monopoly on the PC prevents real innovation and growth from smaller more intelligent companies.

I only hope Red Faction Guerilla and Iron Brigade (both devs still in business!) get patched to Steam. Love them both, would hate to be kept from playing them due to being saddled with a dead DRM function.

Red Faction might be a longshot, with the IP (I believe) changing hands.

I'm still waiting for Arkham City to leave GFWL.

Me too, I bought it as it was 1/3 of the normal price just a month after release, and figured it was worth it. Hoping they do the same and allow you to activate it on Steam + the DLC I bought.

Yes, but didn't you buy the Steam version in the first place?

I'm still waiting for Arkham City to leave GFWL. Yes, I bought the GFWL version because that was the only one available at release. Can't wait for Earth to be rid of this fucking GFWL hellbeast.

The news is a bit late, but still an awesome move. Considering how old the game is they would have been forgiven for just leaving it with the unsupported (and abysmally awful) GWL. Hopefully they get respect from the community for this gesture.
Agreed in full. The game is old enough that they could have easily done nothing, so the fact that they went through all of this effort makes them an upstanding publisher/developer in my book.

Nice. I had put a couple hours in until GFWL ate my save game and I deleted it out of spite. Maybe I'll try it again.

Hey cool, they added Minerva's Den to my library for free! I wish I hadn't read all about it and spoiled the twist ending for myself last year, but I was convinced it was never going to come to Steam.

Letting everyone activate the new copy on Steam is a tremendous move by them, especially since it throws in all the DLC for free.

Kudos to the devs/publishers for doing this!
