Daikatana on Steam

Daikatana is now available on Steam, offering the chance to check out the shooter and be The Romero's bitch for just $6.99 (though it's been cheaper: the game was free for a while years ago on GameTap). The sci-fi game featuring a magical sword and a pair of AI sidekicks was intended as the flagship title from ION Storm, an honor which turned out to be shared by Deus Ex and Anachronox, but the game seems to be in witness protection, as no developer is listed. Thanks nin.

I downloaded the demo way back when, fought to get it running with Power VR, the only Open-GL capable card besides 3dfx and DOS CAD workstations with industrial strength Open GL graphics.

...and fought frogs. Sorry, that just killed my interest in actual fact. And no, back then people weren't yet sick of military shooters. This was the second generation of FPS, consisting of six "Quake killers", of which this, Sin, and the apparently destined-to-be terrible Half Life that stunned the shit out of everyone when it came out.

No, the sword wasn't the problem, or even the frogs per se. It was shoving the opposite of cool, frogs, in your face as the loss leader demo that was supposed to attract you.

I was there. I lived it.

Frogs and mosquitoes were literally less than a quarter of the entire game, yeah they were bad, but the rest was better.

That's exactly the way I remember it but I also recall some birds/bats..? Now that I think about it I never really gave the game much of a chance.

The game was delayed so long, people got jaded by the awesomeness of the FPS games that came before its release. We had boring gameplay and boring graphics, all for the sake of sharp textures. w00t.

I never understood why people complained about the outdoor areas of the jungle in the first level. Of course it was green and of course there were bugs, frogs, mosquitos, snakes and armed corporate goons. It was in the future in a mutated japan.

Its kind of a cross between hexen and quake and it makes no sense at all how negative the commentary is about it.

The big thing though is the multiplayer. That is some fin stuff. good weapons, pretty nice levels and really fast paced action.

you guys are such hypocrites. you complain about all the military shooters out there and then you rip to shreds one of the only games made in years that tried to do something different.

I think the only real issue with the game is that people thought "It has ROMERO working on it! It HAS to be AMAZING!"

When it turned out to not be amazing, but just a pretty solid game, people critically panned it.

Pretty common bandwagon effect, especially on the internet, although it didn't help that the first episode was also pretty mediocre with odd choices for enemies

This game is basically a f-ing robotic zoo attacking you. Robo-frogs and mosquitoes, really???! It wasn't the vomit green color and the downright shitty enemies that made it as bad as it was, it was the general PAIN of playing the actual game. It hurt to play.

DNF was waaaaaaay better. I liked DNF.

The first level was fucking terrible. TERRIBLE. It might genuinely be the worst opening level of any FPS ever.

Then later, you got the awesome shit like your buddy "Supafly" getting stuck on the fucking architecture, and you couldn't proceed because the big fucking dipshit needed to be with you in order to continue.

7 dollars is a fucking joke. It's worth maybe 49 cents just so that it can sit in your library and you can laugh at it.

Daikatana is not THAT bad. Its a solid oldschool shooter with the first RPG elements in the genre, some very nice levels and a fantastic art design.

It isnt just as good as Romero promised us back in the days.

I vividly remember rain and frogs. And not finishing the frist level. Yeah it was that bad.

The first level wasn't great, but it was't THAT bad, and the later episodes were actually quite a lot better. You can't judge from barely dipping into it.

" This should be bundled alongside DNF and A:CM with a coupon for a gun and one bullet."

This would make a great Unholy Trinity Pack!

"It isnt just as good as Romero promised us".

Now insert "Pitchford" in there. See? The names are easilly interchangable.

"It isn`t just as good as Pitchford promised us".

Amazing. They both prolly graduated from the same Game Developement School of Entitlement. ;p
