I downloaded the demo way back when, fought to get it running with Power VR, the only Open-GL capable card besides 3dfx and DOS CAD workstations with industrial strength Open GL graphics.
...and fought frogs. Sorry, that just killed my interest in actual fact. And no, back then people weren't yet sick of military shooters. This was the second generation of FPS, consisting of six "Quake killers", of which this, Sin, and the apparently destined-to-be terrible Half Life that stunned the shit out of everyone when it came out.
No, the sword wasn't the problem, or even the frogs per se. It was shoving the opposite of cool, frogs, in your face as the loss leader demo that was supposed to attract you.
I was there. I lived it.

I never understood why people complained about the outdoor areas of the jungle in the first level. Of course it was green and of course there were bugs, frogs, mosquitos, snakes and armed corporate goons. It was in the future in a mutated japan.
Its kind of a cross between hexen and quake and it makes no sense at all how negative the commentary is about it.
The big thing though is the multiplayer. That is some fin stuff. good weapons, pretty nice levels and really fast paced action.
you guys are such hypocrites. you complain about all the military shooters out there and then you rip to shreds one of the only games made in years that tried to do something different.
I think the only real issue with the game is that people thought "It has ROMERO working on it! It HAS to be AMAZING!"
When it turned out to not be amazing, but just a pretty solid game, people critically panned it.

They could have this on a Steam sale for free and I STILL wouldn't click buy.

This should be bundled alongside DNF and A:CM with a coupon for a gun and one bullet.
It isnt just as good as Romero promised us back in the days.
