Red 5 Studios Reorganizing; Reworking Firefall PvP

Red 5 Studios announces plans to reorganize in advance of the launch of Firefall, saying this has cost some staff their jobs, but has not derailed the ongoing beta testing of their sci-fi sandbox shooter. Word is: "As part of the reorganization, Red 5 Studios confirms that it has released about 10 percent of its staff, the majority from Red 5’s video internet entertainment channel, Stage 5 TV. Development of Firefall is unaffected by the reorganization and Open Beta Stage 2 is well underway with a major patch scheduled for later this month." On a related note, they also recently announced they are pulling the game's underused PvP mode for an overhaul (thanks PC Gamer via Shacknews), saying it "does not represent Firefall at its best," and that they will relaunch that part of the game when its ready."

It's fun but I'm not fussed on spending money on it. The dev team has a bit of a track record of erratic decisions, resulting in completely tearing down and rebuilding the system when they finally realise their decisions were bad ones..

Redoing the leveling/character advancement system not once but twice (including crafting etc) for example.

I actually put real money into the game only to receive a patch about a week later that erased all my minerals, money, etc... reset my stats, and removed all the abilities in my class and replaced them with crap skills. I uninstalled the same day. On a related note i've been playing GW2 and loving it.

The game/UI was disjointed and goals were confusing last time I checked. Then after a few days of playing it, they patched it so it stuffed me into an unskippable tutorial, at which point I uninstalled.

I've been playing since the early betas and there has been a fair amount of improvement. It has been fun, although extremely limited by the lack of a well functioning mission system and a super-retarded upgrade path. Or paths, since they have changed it significantly a couple times. I like the idea of crafting improvements (most similar to Anarchy Online, imo), but the implementation was nothing short of epic suck. Still, it keeps me coming back once in a while, so there's got to be something going for it.

I can't even imagine how much money they've spent developing this game, played the PvE for a little bit and then uninstalled.

Everyone complains that there's nothing but recycled modern military shooters but I think they went off the deep end in terms of the design for this game.

They should make PvE defend and destroy classic from Tribes, I loved playing that mode.

They seem to really be underusing their talent, or maybe they're all just bought into the whole PvE killing bugs crap.

I envisioned FireFall as an action RPG Tribes-inspired FPS shooter with their focus on world pvp (similar to Planetside) and areas for pure PvE if you wanted, but also old-school pvp match modes that Tribes had for tourneys/esports.

It's everything but that unfortunately., and I don't see how it can pull enough gamers to play their bugkill for very long.

It never 'started' as a wow clone, that's just insane ignorance cutter.

I still have high hopes for Firefall. I would never 'grind' it's current PvE mode, but I dislike most FPS PvE to begin with and repeatedly killing bugs gets old super fast.

But their PvP is what I've always envisioned them as focusing on, at least because that's what Scott did with his old Tribes IP and he did it wonderfully at the time.

I hope they focus on PvP, not just matches but real world for the same type of rewards. I just can't see their current PvE holding too many for too long.
Yours truly,

Axis

They started as a WoW clone and switched gears to make it a WoW shooter(ish). It's been in beta for 2 years now. And Orson Scott Card is involved so unless you're a bigot you should stay well away. This thing is over before it even began. That's what happens when you don't have a clear vision.

Firefall isn't a WOW-type game in any way. There's no auto-attack. It's a f2p first/third-person shooter. The PvP resembles something like TF2, in self-contained instanced matches. The PvE takes place in a largish, free-roaming multiplayer world (Planetside is a closer comparison for the PvE world)

I really don't see what 'slot' (for lack of a better term) Firefall *ahem* falls into...I haven't played it so I don't know what the game is like but it seems that the MMO space has become over-saturated with games that just haven't lived up to potential and besides the ol' stand-by's (WoW, Runescape, Evercrack, Planetside, GW2, Eve) there's just no innovation going on. This looked to be a 'by-the-book' type of MMO that every suit with an idea comes up with thinking it'll light the industry on fire. IOW, STOP CHASING WOW!
