How many truly fantastic games are forever gone because they required an online infrastructure which was shut down? I can't think of even one off the top of my head. Maybe with more thought...
City of Heroes.
I'm having trouble thinking of another one, though I expect Warhammer Online is on the chopping block before too long here (and I don't know how many people would agree with me that it was great).
Yeah but that was an MMO. There is no way that an MMO will go on forever. Although in the case of City of Heroes, that shutdown was just plain old stupidity and greed at work.
Still, it was a great game, and it's gone for good. That's the main "feature" the current online games generation has to offer: play as long we think is worth you can play.
It would be nice if EA (and other companies) released some sort of server executables of these decomissioned games so people willing to host it for free could keep the ball rolling. But I reckon I'm expecting too much from the suits...
