I climb in my free time, mostly outdoor rock. Ice climbing requires a lot of training and a lot of expensive gear, it's also much more risky IMHO. No one expects to be rescued on an 8000m peak and Everest less than most because its so expensive and theres usually absurd traffic jams since theres only a small window of time to climb it before monsoon season picks up again. If you can't function on your own then you're pretty much dead unless you're with a large climbing party. That being said his story about leaving that climber to die would have had more impact with me if he hadn't tried to liken it to a situation in his video game.
National Geographic did a story about Everest a few issues ago, and it was ridiculous. It's just a line of people stepping on each other's feet that reaches from camp 4 to the top. And the top is so crowded that typically people can't even get on because there's no room to stand. Here's
