That night, as water pooled around his bed and ramen roiled his stomach, he imagined himself inside his favorite videogame, a military simulation for PCs called Arma 2. He had been playing it since its release in 2009 and often spent three to four hours a day on the game. Now, lying on the jungle floor, his feverish imagination turned Arma 2 into something different. He visualized a new kind of game, one in which there were no missions, no objectives, and no ability to simply be respawn when killed. You had one life, and if you lost it, you lost everything.
Physically, Hall was a mess when he emerged from the jungle — he underwent emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage. But intellectually, he was energized by his visions and inspired to build a new Arma 2 modification.

@Verno, cool hobby I'm just starting to get into it. The kids love it. We go to a local gym for climbing, and sometimes to a rock outcropping (only about 12' high with a sandy bottom for soft landings). Tons of fun.
We just started a few years ago myself but we've been really enjoying it. You meet a lot of cool people, although there are some pretty crazy ego seekers who seem attracted to it as well. I go to an indoor in the winter/fall and mainly stick to established rock routes in the spring and summer. I'm thinking about taking some courses at Rainier next year if I can get the time off work, maybe work my way into ice climbing. It's hella expensive though, the gear alone is nuts and I'm not sure I want to sit around melting ice for water for hours on big mountains just for bragging rights. Then again you see some pictures of Annapurna, Nanga Parbat or K2 and hell, a man can dream![]()
Anyways glad to hear you got the kids into it, its a great physical activity. If you ever want to swap stories or etc hit me up on Steam, I've got some pretty crazy pictures already![]()

Imagine trying to climb K2 though, seriously look at this picture. That mountain wants to fucking kill you!

National Geographic did a story about Everest a few issues ago, and it was ridiculous. It's just a line of people stepping on each other's feet that reaches from camp 4 to the top. And the top is so crowded that typically people can't even get on because there's no room to stand.

I climb in my free time, mostly outdoor rock. Ice climbing requires a lot of training and a lot of expensive gear, it's also much more risky IMHO. No one expects to be rescued on an 8000m peak and Everest less than most because its so expensive and theres usually absurd traffic jams since theres only a small window of time to climb it before monsoon season picks up again. If you can't function on your own then you're pretty much dead unless you're with a large climbing party. That being said his story about leaving that climber to die would have had more impact with me if he hadn't tried to liken it to a situation in his video game.
