id Hiring a Design Director

Gamasutra notes their job board now includes a listing for a Design Director position at id Software. Tim Willits has served for several years as the company's Creative Director, but to our knowledge, Design Director is a role that nobody has filled before. Here's how the job is described:
Managing a team of designers through every phase of development – from concept and prototyping, through full production Working with producer to determine tasks and schedules while meeting milestones Collaborate with other team leads to design and build game systems and logic Head design meetings and group game review sessions Continually review the game and provide feedback to designers and artists Collaborate on game design documentation, writing proposals, and final docs for all aspects of the game’s design

I KNOW I KNOW! !!!!

Something jumps out of a closet and you shoot it 1500 times.

DO I GET THE JOB???? We could make everything dark too!!! That way we don't actually have to worry about gameplay!!!!

Well how about a multiplayer shooter???? Then screw everyone over and maybe have a lan party once a year with nothing to show for a decade??? YAH!!!!

Could that be an idea? Maybe with an actual mod community??

Nah how about we pump out crap for 20 years and spent everyones the money on blowing up rockets? Could that be a good idea????

Oh yah and talk about video memory for two decades might that be the ticket???

They sure did follow a formula.
However, it was a good formula for the time.

It worked until the "mil-sim" games came around, and ~all action FPS games basically disappeared.

I rather like everything Id did up until Rage.
Even doom3 had great multiplayer ... IF you knew how to bunny hop and rocket jump. Which sadly, by then, few people knew how to do. They wandered around like geriatrics, complaining that the game isn't action packed enough, and would scream cheater when someone would show up that could actually navigate better than a cripple.
Actually, I blame that (people not knowing how to move quickly) on how popular the "Press forward to walk... Great! You've mastered moving!" mil-sim games were/are.

That said, the closet + monster + repeat crap in the SP portion was stupid.

Id games have always had an open door policy for modding.
That's one thing you can't hold against them.
