Montgomery was a horrible general, it was a shame because the brits had better generals. He supposedly was credited for beating Rommel, when in actuality, the only thing that beat Rommel was his horrible state of supply.
Montgomery messed up Market Garden, and then delayed the allies immensely at D-Day. Ike tried to avoid the man like the plague.
You're overestimating Rommel. He was a charismatic person, but not a great strategist. He sent thousands of men into battles that he could not win, and his military advisors told him so. Still he insisted on his operations, sacrificing the lives of the soldiers that believed in him.
Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president.
