StarCraft Universe Kickstarter

StarCraft Universe has now landed on Kickstarter, where the team behind this modification once known as World of StarCraft is looking to raise $80K (thanks Rock, Paper, Shotgun and nin). This seems to now have the full support of Blizzard, as they describe this as a "free to play science fiction Multi-Player Online RPG played through Battle.net on StarCraft II. (No StarCraft purchase required)." Here's further word: "StarCraft Universe tells a story set in an alternate reality, where the ending of StarCraft II:Wings of Liberty has a grim conclusion for Kerrigan. Without the Queen of Blades to stop the hybrid’s assault, the protoss are overwhelmed and defeated. In this reality, what would the survivors of these shattered worlds do? StarCraft Universe tells this story." Here's word on why they are seeking funding for a mod:
Upheaval has been developing StarCraft Universe for over two years with no funding whatsoever, donating their time and effort to its development with no monetary reward. All developers on the project have had to return to work their normal day jobs, dramatically hindering the progression of the project due to its time intensive requirements.

After releasing the StarCraft Universe Beta Prologue: Chronicles of Fate to the public, we're hoping to receive backing from the awesome StarCraft community to push our project forward and expand the team with sufficient funds to expedite the development process. With your help, we'll have the time, motivation, and resources we need to put that fresh looking AAA polish on SCU and get it out to you faster, better, and sexier.

From the website: "While Blizzard is not directly affiliated with this project's production, we do communicate with them to submit bug reports and make technical requests. They have given their blessing/permission for us to launch this Kickstarter, and they are supporting our efforts by featuring SCU as an Arcade Highlight."
That's not the same thing as a signed contractual agreement to use their IP. Which is basically what they should have, and almost certainly don't.
Actiblizz is an idiot if they let this continue, both because of having someone else mess with their IP as a paid product with no control over it (for instance if it fails it will could actiblizz look bad), and because if they were feeling that generous about that team to give their blessing, they shoulda just hired them or given them the $80k peanuts (to actiblizz) they are asking.

"Full" support, eh? Then why doesn't Actiblizz take some of their WoW billions from their treasure chest and truly show some "full support" for these guys?
Definitely not even beginning to consider spending a single cent on this crap.

There's also the issue that these guys are making it sound like "meh going back to work sucked so please throw some money our way so we can quit our jobs and go back to being lazy game modders". And the line about motivation through money sounds cheesy as hell, too. You either do this because you have the passion and dedication required or you don't.

That was my thoughts too, how can blizz allow this and not support it so they can be in control of it. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

eitherway, I wont be supporting it, too much of a risk.

I'd say non support from Blizzard if they can't get a lousy 80k from them...

I'm confused, does this have legal backing? Could they be sued by Blizzard out of existence? It hints at Blizzards support in the kickstarter, but they really should make clear if there is or is not danger of legal issues.

That was my thought as well. Previously, it has blizzard's blessing. But the moment any of that funding becomes a "profit"? I can't see the lawyers letting that happen.(IE they would literally have to show they put every single cent into making their mod)
