Perhaps we could say that about a lot of civilizations. Food and toys (encompasses a lot) are pretty paramount to keeping people at bay. I'm not sure this is an American phenomenon.

Actually, I think the original term was "Bread and Circuses"... and it's the reason why history matters. Everyone likes to think that they could never be part of an evil society... but given the right circumstances and incentives, the average shmo will be goosestepping right along with his neighbors...

Reducing the amount of employees that have god-mode access to the most sophisticated and wide reaching spy system ever developed is a good thing no matter where you stand on the topic.

I'd rather have more human eyes on it than less. The only reason we know about this shit with any certainty is because there was a human who saw what was going on and decided it wasn't right.

You can do that without full access. A role could be created specifically to deal with review and oversight alone.

Yup. No way to stop it either. Americans are not willing to resort to the measures necessary to retake their privacy. As long as there are plenty of food and toys, Americans will take anything and everything (as a whole, there are always exceptions).

That is why trust is so important. They can't expect to lie to us forever and not have it catch up with them. It's a paramount quality to posses, to the point the Prez knows it is becoming a real issue.

The other 98.4% is spam, porn and video streaming so you might as well admit you capture most of the communications.

That is exactly how I read it too.

As for jobs for know good reason. I do agree with that. But just how I envision why there are really doing this, trumps that.

Oh now I see what you mean. Well just because the president comes on TV and says something doesn't mean it's true. Skepticism is healthy when it comes to what they say. You can tell if he's lying by looking at his mouth. Look to see if it's open. Every indication is that they are not interested in transparency or accountability or even legality.

Yeah, and I'm sure they've just upset 900 sysadmins. Dumb move on their part.

What? You're upset about this? These 'jobs' aren't producing anything. They's a drain on the economy. However as Minstalker said, they haven't necessarily been fired, especially if they are contractor jobs. Their contracts might not be renewed. That's the risk of being a contractor.

As for the drain on the economy, get real. If we got rid of all fat, we'd probably nearing 30% unemployment. I may not have a job in a perfectly lean world, perhaps you wouldn't either. Just remember a key part, when gov't spends money it isn't burning it. It is being cycled to people who will live, spend, such is the circle of the economic life. I want to say that as I catch many in face to face discussion, over state when a tax dollar is used, it is cycled (good) not burned (bad). Money cycling isn't ust a good thing, it is THEE thing, without it real Doom(tm).

I honestly doubt that's what he meant. Just because you automate someone's task doesn't mean you fire them. I've heard they are having trouble hiring qualified people. You don't fire someone just because you've automated their job if you can find uses for them elsewhere.

One day the Prez talks about changes to snooping to settle us some. The next day the ass wipe known as a general comes out and cans 90% of those monitoring systems, not because of really good reasons, but because their are potential leaks, because their shit smells and they aren't really bound to change it, so we need to remove the humans that have free wills. President, sorry we cannot trust this. IMO this reduction needs to be explained to the people now. Busy today? JHC
