I also hope they find her safe.
So after finding out I have alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, and on the road to getting back to work, I pass off my 'return to work' paperwork at the doctors office Thursday 2 weeks ago, and get a call from the officer manager that they lost all my paperwork and need to come in for a checkup to make sure I'm really able to do so after my doctor said it was ok. Fast forward to Tues. of last week, where my sister and nephews head to the west coast on vacation, and my bro-in-law to the east coast for work. Mom calls me says she needs to go to the ER because she hasn't gone to the bathroom in 12 days. I'm thinking ok, easy enough ER trip that I can do solo. Turns out my mom has a major blockage and they try 2 enema treatments, with little success. They want to do exploratory surgery with recommendations that her colon be removed. (For those who don't know you can live without your colon, but you are on a colostomy bag if this happens). They go in and find all sorts of problems including some gangrene, so the colon has to be removed. The big question was if she would survive the surgery (being 72 years old, 128 lbs, blood pressure issues, OCPD, etc). Thankfully she survived it and is a few days from being off the ventilator.
The hardest thing I ever had to see in my life was back when I was 12 after my father's liver transplant and seeing this huge built 6'6 240lbs guy hooked up to every machine under the sun including a respirator. That was until a few days ago where I see this tiny, frail 5'2 120lbs women hooked up to the same machinery that made her look even that more frail and tiny. Sadly my father never left the hospital after his surgery, but every day my mom is getting stronger and progressing 3 times as fast as anyone they have ever seen, considering the odds.
The really suck part of this is that I'm suppose to quit smoking due to A1AT, but considering my brother in law gave me full access to his liquor stash while he was gone (which I haven't touched.. YET), I think I'm doing pretty good so far.
Sorry just needed to get this off my chest, and after my immediate family, you guys rank a close 2nd.
