What Microsoft has never understood is that it is NOT the hardware that matters, it is the capability/price ratio that matters. (Normal) people don't care what OS the tablet is running, or what hardware is inside. They want to know "What can it do?" and "How much does it cost?".

WinRT will always fail when it is less capable than an iPad at similar price point, or more expensive than an Android tablet at the similar capability level. It's that simple. You need a tablet that can either do more than similarly priced competitors, or you need to be cheaper than similarly capable competitors. RT is neither, therefore it failed. Roll in the lack of an APP market (compared to IOS and Android), and it will never succeed.

SurfacePro might have a chance... but not at the present price-point. It's competing with laptops, whether it wants to or not (especially since many new laptops are including touch screens ... why, I don't know...). It's form factor hasn't been enough to overcome the price differences yet. Microsoft either needs to wait until they can get more value for their components, or they need to take an even bigger loss if they want to sell SurfacePros. That's reality.

Yup, that sums it up really well.

The sooner Windows RT is dead, the better. Unfortunately it sounds like NVIDIA is all gung ho on having their stuff in the next-gen Surface RT. And MS realllllly wants people to transition to their new model where everyone is forced to buy all software through their app store where they have total control and take a cut of everything. So unfortunately I think they will keep trying...

It is interesting that ASUS is dropping the RT tablets. I recently purchased a Vivo Smart Tab with the full Windows 8 on it for the in laws and it suits them perfectly. It uses all their old software and they don't mind the tabs on a tablet.

The specs are a bit low... but for the price is was decent, and when hooked upto a bluetooth mouse + keyboard it's just another PC.

The RT versions of things however, not so great. You can't just install normal windows software.. you're stuck with what is in their app store (there are some workarounds, but not really worth it). They are really a late to the market iPad/Nexus.

Glad Asus have noticed and ditched it, now if only MS realised the same thing...
