Strife Announced

S2 Games announces Strife, a new MOBA in development for release this winter, bragging that this makes them the only studio with two MOBAs currently in development, as they continue to support Heroes of Newerth while creating the new game. The Strife website is online, offering a teaser trailer, and here's word on what will make this game different:
Unlike other MOBAs, Strife is built entirely around the idea of a collective, contributing community. Predicated on creating a more connected multiplayer experience that incentivizes cooperation, Strife streamlines communication between players with innovative, in-client social systems and rewards players for team collaboration, not simply placing highest on a leaderboard. It also employs design elements that instruct and inform, providing immediate feedback for genre newcomers and veterans alike.

Strife aims to make strides in MOBA storytelling, delivering an engrossing world with a layered backstory to further connect players with the heroes they choose. It all begins when the invasion of the Dharkwave, harbingers of darkness foretold by prophecy, is imminent, promising catastrophe upon the world. Its only hope is an Army of Light, forged in the crucible of battle to hold the line against their impending arrival. Players must overcome “The Trials of Strife,” as well as one another, to prove themselves as champions worthy to face the Dharkwave.

There was STRIFE and there was another game that was much more of an RPG that was set in a fantasy setting. I don't think the fantasy RPG one used the doom engine (or anything based off of it) but it WAS a 2.5d doom-like engine. Wish I could remember the name of it. Had to be before '98 the last time I saw or played the game.

They all ran on the Doom engine, even Strife. Strife was the last game made on the Doom engine but was released after Quake came out so it looked really dated by the time it was released which really hurt it.

Strife was really ahead of its time too. A real story, killing everything was a Bad thing, multiple endings, could buy supplies. Nothing remotely like it before then.

System Shock, Ultima Underworld I & II, Pathways into Darkness, Terminator: Future Shock and Marathon I & II were all pre-Strife and more advanced in many ways. None of them had multiple endings, though.

Most of those aren't FPS games, and the ones that are still followed along the lines of "everything must die".

The only ones that might not be shooters are the Underworld games, which do everything a shooter does and more. Everything else on the list is definitely a shooter. System Shock had respawning enemies so you couldn't kill everything. Terminator: Future Shock generally had more enemies than you could kill. And Future Shock and the Marathon games had friendlies that you weren't supposed to kill. Pathways was kill everything, but now that I think about it, it did have multiple endings.

Yep, it introduced so many elements of gaming that I hadn't experienced before. Loved that game.

Phew, for a second there I thought we'd go a week without the announcement of a new MOBA.

Hopefully developers will start to see this market is saturated, and maybe try to bring some revolutionary new ideas to the MOBA genre, like:

Building Structures
Building Units
Controlling multiple units at once
Decent Enemy AI
Offline Single Player.

I am sure there is an acronym out there waiting to be discovered for a game like that.

Damn, was hoping this was a remake or re-release of old doom-engine STRIFE game that was so much fun.
+1

there are so many moba's coming out recently that I'm surprised there isn't a moba where the characters are devs of mobas fighting each other to release a moba.

MOBA.

Strife was the first game I remember playing with NPCs, in-game characters that you interacted with in ways other than pointing a gun at them and turning them into giblets. I don't imagine Strife was anything like the first to do this but at the time I was impressed by how the world felt because of this.

It's piss by today's standards of course, as are the graphics/etc but that was cool back in the day. At least the demo was.

I've never played a MOBA game, as far as I know. I had to Google it to see what it is.

What next? Call of Duty MOBA? Half-Life 3: The MOBA?

Pretty much pick up any MOBA then, they all have offline/bot matches. Its like deathmatch FPS games, you can play the bots but its the online that has the challenge.
