Here's the thing, tho: Netflix is an application, not a broadcast. It doesn't have to be only one format. On the play page, they can offer the choice of "Fill the Screen" or "Original Widescreen version (with black bars)" and let the customer choose. It's really that simple.

I agree with the majority is happier with filling the screen. I am, but I can go either way without hitting things. I also don't care about the directors original vision, we blow up those visions all the time in the game world and the trade off to me equals out. Full view vs bigger view. Enee Meanee Minee Mo.

Streaming is the bane of videophiles. You will not win, the majority standards are way below those of the philes and the studio's are going to save on bandwidth when they can to satisfy the majority. So for you Mr. Perfect... BluRay.

Though I want to see films in their original version, I don't think that's the majority view of the general public. They want it to fill their screen. At least a 16:9 pan-and-scan isn't nearly as bad as a 4:3. This is an argument I gave up pursuing with almost every girlfriend I've ever had (that and "the TV speakers are good enough").

Of course, the easy answer is to have both versions, but then the studios will treat them as separate products and double the price. A technological solution isn't impossible (do the cropping on the client side), but who would take responsibility for it? Of course, IMO, if people want full screen, let them just expand the center of the picture to fill their screen. Hopefully they'll come to appreciate why it matters soon enough.
