Perhaps the project leaders can't get the backing for a whole new Homeworld game, so they are testing the water and as Wenzil says, building up the technology.
Do these make much money? They tend to be greeted with more excitement when they're announced than when they're released.

To me, if offering a HD version of classic older games is what gets a new generation ofwalletscustomers to play, appreciate, and become interested in well crafted games like this one then I am all for it. If all it does it get the same players to re-buy the game, I am not sure I see the point. It would be interesting to see which is more common...the veteran or the virgin.
The HD versions of games like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are the only reason my 19 year old nephew ever played them. It exposed him to gaming of a different quality and it has affected his purchasing choices. Now he expects more from games and he pays more attention to who makes them. That is great and all, but I wonder how common that really is. The enthusiast in me wants to believe that gaming has aged to the point that the classics will continue to be re-mastered and re-released to new generations, much like the Monopoly or Life board games, because they are timeless and that is how you get new generations to play them. The cynic in me thinks it is a complete cash grab being employed because pre-existing assets make development cheaper, faster, and doable with smaller teams.

While they have done games that could be described as 'bad' in many different ways, they have also done some pretty good games. Rather than writing them off, I would urge people to be critically analytical =)
For the record, I most definitely do not like Randy Pitchford.

Kind of a big pile of dull. And I guess people really like Borderlands, but it's not my kind of thing.
Funny to see Samba de Amigo in that list, though.

After all the shit surrounding the Aliens release I'm kind of surprised everyone is happy about them simply repackaging a classic like Homeworld and cashing in on it.
I love the original. I want a new game. I don't want to play games I've already played a decade prior.. I don't know what there is to be excited about.
Tell me they're making HW3. Then I'd be excited.

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about Homeworld:Cataclysm?
Wasn't made by relic, I think it was cave dog who made it. Shame really because despite the b-movie plot it probably has the best combat mechanics/interesting features of the three. lets see, wormholes, exploding resources, huge cannons, races which actually play differently, ships which combine together to form force fields, stealth ships that leach health, absorbing enemy force, etc etc.
I think there's a lot of rose tinted glasses here. Homeworld combat mechanics were nothing special. Where homeworld stood out was treating the player intelligently (shock), actual proper 3d battlefield and most importantly the atmosphere of the game.
Homeworld 2 was rushed out mediocrity, the story was a jarred mess and nothing really stood out about it, I really hope there's some changes to it.

I don't have high hopes that Gearbox can do this.

Those games already looked great for their time. I fail to see what a remake will bring to the table. I'd far rather see an entirely new game in the same style.
