Star Citizen Campaign Soars

The Roberts Space Industries website offers a 'thank you' to supporters of Star Citizen as the crowd-sourced funding of this Wing Commander-inspired space game has passed the $14 million threshold. They outline the goals this triggers, as the game will now support a "hibernation mode" allowing players to safely shut down and resume operations of their spacecraft in deep space and they will be creating a "professional-quality" behind-the-scenes trailer for the game that I will watch some day along with all those similar features on all my DVDs and Blu-Rays. Not content with this plateau, they also outline further goals, describing a new ship and a player handbook that will be added at the $15 million mark and an Arena Mode that will be added at the $16 million mark along with a pew-pew laser to fight off space pirates. Thanks Talisorn.

Hell I don't really understand all the stretch goals. I mean, Roberts must have made a FORTUNE off the 'Wing Commander' movie alone...

The bluray release for Wing Commander is in August. Hey it didn't do the games justice, but it still is Wing Commander.

Wow, where do they keep getting money from?? I backed this on KS but I'm surprised they are still making millions without any kind of advertising that I know of. I just hope they use some of that money to improve/expand the SP portion of the game.

I think it's a bit of a nostalgia combined with some good old... err, new fashioned KS hysteria. And remember, the people who played WC originally are now the 30-40 somethings with some disposable income to play with.

I'm in a player organisation for over 25's (http://theoldergamers.com/) and currently our player "fleet" probably has 15-25 grand worth of purchased ships including 2 Idris corvettes (which between them account for ~$2700 bucks iirc).

And I thought people were nuts to spend 50 bucks buying a tank in World of Tanks...

I went back and looked at my original pledge (digi freelancer, 110 bucks for a ship, alpha/beta access, creds, full SP game + MP game) and I'm satisfied with it, but a lot of our guys caught the "gotta get life time insurance" bug, or decided to plunk down 200-250 a pop for shit like fuel tankers because the fleet might need them.

Wow 1 million dollars for an extra button on your ship and another million for a tacked on arena mode.

Talk about diminishing returns.

I'm actually glad they're adding so little. Means they can keep the cash for the original features for which I think they underappreciated how much money they'll need.

Yeah. It's not like these companies are actually setting aside thousands and thousands of bucks to add some particular feature. The money just goes into the pot. Stretch goal additions are just a little added incentive, you're not actually "buying" that feature for a million bucks.

Yeah, how dumb it that. Focus always on content first. His stetch goals are exorbinatn at any rate. A million for each goal? Nope, wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole.

I'm in. I'm really not that excited about this game and I only put in like 30 bucks, figure if it epic fails that's less then I paid for a lot of games I still haven't played or hated over the years, on the other hand if he makes it work then I feel like I got a good deal, only time will tell.

I've ordered this yesterday. It looks awesome.
I was surprised that even for a $40 package you get access to Alpha and beta builds.

Thank heaven above for small miracles... migrating from the old RSI account to the new one was easy-ish and successful! And once you get off the front page of the new web site, you actually can find what you are looking for. The front page isn't quite as informative as it could be.

I think the poster who commented that all of these extras and packages would rapidly devalue as you progress in the game was correct, as you would purchase/acquire better equipment in time...

Such as a playable Escort Carrier, having that as a stretch goal is tempting as it's probably as close to a personal Capital ship you will be able to own. While the Arena, or at least the simulation part of it will be already included in single-player, as CR games have included in the past.

Squadron 42 has already been "locked in" as it were since the bulk of the early goals were for SP as opposed to MP. 50 missions, a full orchestral score, and celebrity voice acting (they're bringing back one of the WC favorites; dollars to donuts says Hamill). There's even a further 16 mission expansion campaign planned, which all of the original backers will get for free.

At this point all additional funding (besides offsetting the need to take private money) is technically for further enhancing Star Citizen. Though sharable assets such as additional mo-cap and new ships become available for S42 should they choose to use them.

Because those trailer brings them more money and whole building assets will cost 21-22 milion.

There's currently 0 SP portion of the game. What's to improve or expand?
