Watch_Dogs Engine Features

There's an interview on GamingBolt talking with Ubisoft Montreal about Watch_Dogs/Watch Dogs the upcoming hacker game. They seem intent on provoking someone into saying the PS4 edition would be better than it's counterparts, and we spotted this on OXM where they pick out details suggesting the Xbox One edition would actually hold this distinction, but the developers will have none of this, saying: "The Xbox One is a powerful platform, as of now we do not foresee a major difference in on screen result between the PS4 and the Xbox One." When asked about the Windows edition of the game's Disrupt engine, lead programmer Francis Boivin gives a somewhat confusing answer that it will offer "state of the art visuals on all its quality levels":
Disrupt was developed to have state of the art visuals on all its quality levels. We needed to have AO, massive dynamic light support, HDR, GI, depth of field, etc. to fully realize the ambition of art direction. We improved on techniques that we worked on in the past and surveyed what was available for the highest level of quality we wanted to achieve. We didn’t just integrate the technique of the moment, but spent quite some time turning stuff around and mixing algorithms so they fit our requirements.

That's how they managed to port Quake 2 to the freaking PS1. This is how PS2 pulled off games like Shadow of the Colossus and Black (with shader effects the console isn't capable off). This is how end-of-life PS3 titles like "Last Of Us" look pretty stunning considering the console is based on GeForce3-strength hardware.

PS4 hardware is incomparably more powerful, so I don't exclude the possibility that it's going to beat PC in terms of visuals.

While it's true that consoles are more efficient and can thus do more with less, efficiency only takes you so far. PC hardware is already significantly more powerful than what's going into the PS4 and Xbone and that power gap is only going to widen over time.

Also, the PSOne port of Q2 was pretty terrible. It's not comparable to the PC version at all.

I doubt the PS4 would be a match for my $3K gaming PC... but I get your point... Microsh!t’s operating systems are horribly inefficient and bloated, and like the Intel x86 PC architecture, its primary purpose was never as a gaming platform. However, the PC has overcome its limitations with sheer power.

Now I would believe that games on the PS4 will look better than a PC costing three times as much.

You just watch......I wouldn't at all be surprised if MS along with the payments for exclusive DLC also hand money over fist for devs to tone down visuals on PS4 to meet Xbox 180 visuals.

You might have a leg to stand on if you used the term "average PC" instead of "highest-end," but as it is you're out of your goddamned mind. You realize a single GeForce Titan has almost triple the graphics processing power of the PS4, right? You're making a huge assumption by saying two-thirds of that power is "wasted" on the system running Windows. I'd be interested to hear how you think it works out that way. And if you really want to go to extremes, you could have three of those in a single machine... I'd love to see the PS4 play Crysis 3 maxed out at 5760x1200 and 8X MSAA without issues.

Really, though, if what you're claiming could happen does, in fact, happen, it won't be because a PC can't "pull it off." It will be because the developers chose to do a shitty port.

Still, I would be shocked if the PS4, with its more powerful GPU and faster memory, doesn't at least have higher levels of AA.
And it wouldn't surprise me if the PS4 has better shader and particle effects as well.

Still the 180 has Xbox Live going for it... Now, if only they'd include the dang chat headset so you can keep your family out of the conversation (Kinect chat by default).

I remember wben at some point in the past, devs would mention their engine's features to promote what set it apart from the crowd. I don't really see the point of stating all those features we can see in about every other game around. This said I am looking forward to trying that game if the gameplay is as exciting as it sounds.

I like how the "Xbox 180" has become the regular term for the device at this point.


As for the game, looks only mildly interesting to me. Bargain bin at best. Sacrilege, I know.

Only with terrible controls and UI, because if they did a PC UI right there'd be no reason to buy it on consoles.

So, according to the article the PS4 version will look better than the 180 but they are trying to get it as close as possible. They used to say similar things about the PS3 compared to the 360. Now MS is on the other side of those conversations. PC will rule at least at the super high-end.

It's not as if developers are going to put more effort into a more powerful platform. Games always get developed for the lowest common denominator. Surprise surprise that the Official Xbox Magazine website would think that the 180 is more powerful when literally every single peon with half a braincell knows that's not the case. (Although after reading the article, it seems they are talking about the differences between the 180 and the 360.)

At minimum it's GTA with hacking. It sounds more like GTA crossed with Far Cry 3 with hacking though.

Either way... setting expectations for what I listed above should be reasonable. Anything else that's cool, will be just icing on the cake.
