Steamships Ahoy - Rogue Legacy

GOG.com and Steam now offer Rogue Legacy, a procedurally generated roguelike they cal a "rogue-LITE," perhaps because unlike a Roguelike with permadeath, this game features the chance for future generations to carry on with the fight:
Rogue Legacy is a genealogical rogue-"LITE" where anyone can be a hero.

Each time you die, your child will succeed you. Every child is unique. One child might be colorblind, another might have tourettes-- they could even be a dwarf.

That's OK, because no one is perfect, and you don't have to be perfect to win this game. But you do have to be pretty darn good because this game is HARD. Fortunately, every time you die all the gold you've collected can be used to upgrade you manor, giving your next child a step up in life and another chance at vanquishing evil.

This game looks fun, but $15 is a bit pricey and there is no demo. What gives? Anyways, no doubt it will be in a future humble bundle.

There is a demo. Here: http://www.roguelegacy.com/
Sweet! Thanks.

To me a rogue-like game has randomized levels and a "you die once and it's over" deal. That's it.

That about sums it up; the game's brutally difficult early on.

The "twist" is that after you die, your "child" hero gains from whatever experience / gold collected and you do it all over again.

The levels are completely randomly generated by default.

It's actually quite a bit of fun and the music tracks are great.

These days, rogue-likes are primarily defined by permadeath and mostly randomized content. FTL, Spelunky, Dungeons of Dredmor, Rogue Legacy, Binding of Isaac, etc, would all fit under this definition.

Notice how Steam tagged the game

Action, RPG, Indie, Platformer

Ergo, Action Platformer with RPG elements. And a fairly decent one at that Not anywhere near as good as Dust though.

They even emphasize LITE to tell you that it isn't even as rogue-ish as a rogue-like. It's more vaguely inspired-by.

Still, going on my watch list.

No, by my rationale, you could say something is 'something-like' if it is of the same form, appearance, kind, character, amount, etc. Or is corresponding or agreeing in general or in some noticeable respect; similar; analogous. OR even if it just bears a resemblance. Because, you know, English.

Which is why I pointed out explicit similarities. And also why my example used two things that were of similar character.

The Giant Bomb quick look got me to play it: http://www.giantbomb.com/videos/quick-look-rogue-legacy/2300-7631/

It's a fun, cheap time waster, though if you're one of those people that are sick of indie platformers this won't do anything to change your mind.

It's a side scroller. How is that at all like Rogue?
In the same ways Spelunky is. Single character, one life per run, procedurally generated maps. Rogue-like != Rogue. It's like calling a tofu-based frozen dessert "ice cream-like".

"There is no dairy. How is that at all like ice cream?"

...

By that rationale you could say anything is 'something-like'.
