Out of the Blue

Happy birthday QUAKE, as id Software's shooter was first released 17 years ago today on June 22, 1996. In recalling this I'm struck by how it came out on the cusp of all sorts of changes: It was an MS-DOS game, most of us were online using modems at the time, and no graphics cards featured 3D hardware acceleration. But within less than a year, a hardware accelerated version and a Windows version was released, and it wasn't long after that most of us were able to leave the screech of modems behind. Seems fair to say that QUAKE helped usher in a modern game era in more ways than one (it took a lot of restraint to avoid using the term "shook up" in there).

I'm kind of surprised now looking back on FPS how much happened from 1996-1999. People (myself included) like to hate on how there's a new CoD every year and I guess I'm just forgetting how the Quake series happened:

Quake (1996)
Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge of Armagon (1997)
Quake Mission Pack 2: Dissolution of Eternity (1997)
Quake II (1997)
Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning (1998)
Quake II Mission Pack: Ground Zero (1998)
Quake III Arena (1999)
Quake III: Team Arena (2000)

When I was playing HL, CS and Q3 I felt like Quake was ancient but it was only about 3 years earlier.

That's not to say that CoD still isn't over saturated and uninnovative:

Call of Duty (2003)
Call of Duty 2 (2005)
Call of Duty 3 (2006)
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007)
Call of Duty: World at War (2008)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010)
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011)
Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012)

(without expansions/DLC and console/mobile)

The difference is the huge tech leap between each quake games and how different each quake was where the tech jump between CODs is pretty low and all COD are way too similar.

I live in an apartment so it's required.

I am still not sure why I would want a FIRE ONLY alarm in my house. Seems to me the "smoke" vs "fire" ratio is like 50000 to 1 and I'd like to KNOW when there is smoke, no matter what kind.

My stupid smoke detector in its default location goes off from the steam from my shower.

At least you know it's working Besides, default location in the bathroom???? Where I live, the detectors are supposed to sit in the staircase at every floor. And CO detector (optional) right where you sleep and wherever your heating is. That is the maximum possible early warning system. What kind of fire could break out in the bathroom apart from hot steam and bad deo? ^^

Nah it's supposed to be in the hallway but it's right outside the bathroom door. First few days I lived here I had to jump out of the shower still wet to wave away the steam and get it to shut up. So I took it down and relocated it because I don't think my apartment neighbors would appreciate an ear piercing alarm every morning.

Not that the book was high art or anything but the movie version of "The Hunger Games" was exactly like the book, save the obvious condensing necessary to cram it into a 90-minute film.

What if the fire is caused by burning food? I'm confident this is a major source of house fires.

Most of the time the food fires die out quickly and just create a ton of smoke as the food burns to a crisp - doesn't do much. The detectors probably pickup on all of the chemicals in furniture, carpet, clothing, plastics, etc....

Actually I'm boycotting the movie, the previews showed that it was far enough away from the source material to be something else entirely. Maybe I will Netflix it eventually. Still, I was hoping for shocked outrage in thousands of theaters across the globe, as fans of the novel who somehow missed all the previews, stood up in their seats, tears streaming down their faces, as they cried out in protest.

There is different from the book, and then there is "we took the name, and nothing else."

Give power back to the community!

Let us to map, mod and host our own servers again! In the good ol' days we had the power to set up our own rules on our own game servers, and if a suspicious player turned up, who seem to cheat, he was instant banned.

It used to be laughs and jokes on servers. Now it's just a damn chaos and kids screaming "NOOB" to the right and left.

PLEASE game developers! Give us the joy back!

I get so frustrated over how it has become when I realize how good we had it when Quake was new... Wall
