Steam Game Sharing Planned?

A thread on NeoGAF notes some code in the new Steam beta suggesting Valve is planning to allow Steam users to select games to share with a circle of friends. This is confirmed on Kotaku, where they say Valve has not yet responded to the report (not a shock since their story went up at 3:00 am on the west coast). Here is the code in question:
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it's time to quit."
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText" "This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library."

well now 4 times.

This. Thanks Seph.

But ya no big deal, just when someone attempts to insult and they mistake "purchased" with "played", prolly best to make sure you comprehend the question fully before throwing out the insult.

I prefer no insults all of the time, but I do bite back.

So you haven't purchased any non-Valve games recently?
Not a single one, and not for a very long time (last purchase was the THQ selloff, and havent fired any of em up yet) -- though I meant more in innovation than just some gameplay formula. I play TF2, Dota2, PoE, quakelive, and plenty of indies.
Games I'm interested in playing in the future are Cardhunter, the new oldschool M&M, Castlestory, and the new wasteland.

Must be a comprehension thing. A lot of those you mention are not Valve games.

Dude are you even slightly serious to throw out an insult when it's painfully obvious the other way around?

(Mis-Quote NKD stated this)

Axis wrote:

Pretty self explanatory. Then I answered these games:

THQ sellof (not recent, specifically stated it was the last non-valve game I purchased)
TF2, DOTA2 - Valve.
PoE - FREE, INDIE, not AAA.
Quakelive - FREE, but been playing Quake games since the 90s

Cmon man... you guys sometimes kill me.

Not that this is a big deal...

1. So are you saying you were being sarcastic? Because I don't understand this otherwise:
PoE - FREE, INDIE, not AAA.
Quakelive - FREE, but been playing Quake games since the 90s

Those are non-valve games and you said yo haven't played a one game that isn't Valve. I got the THQ part being the last non-valve.

2. You go on to mis-quote me, I didn't say "So you haven't purchased any non-Valve games recently?". So that is an obvious oops on your end. NKD stated that.

It just stuck out that you said you don't play non-valve and then listed a couple non-valve and a whole genre of non-valve games.

Verbatim:
NKD asked: So you haven't purchased any non-Valve games recently?

You: Not a single one, and not for a very long time (last purchase was the THQ selloff (got this, last non valve THQ)

You Con't with: I play TF2, Dota2, PoE, quakelive, and plenty of indies.

You do see non-Valve games in there, no?

Oh wells. We got a plane shot down, a building that fell for no good reason, drones watching us, everyone and their brother recording us, not a big deal.

But since you questioned my comprehension and that I'm killing you, I felt compelled to correct you.

What about CD Project Red? Their service is a billion times better than Steam and they are pretty much the only place to get old games that have been out of circulation for a long ass time.

And most if not all are DRM free, can't say that about everyone's precious little Valve and Steam.

Hey, thanks for the tip!

Hmm, not there. Let's try another.

Strange, not there either.

Grr. Well, what DO they have???!

Well, at least I won't have to play around with compatibility mode.

Remember: they're giving you these changes not because they want to, but because they have to.

If they could get away with it, they'd keep doing it. Keep that in mind as you open your wallet.

They just updated it now!! XD

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360."

Hurray! Now only Steam will have DRM!

I think his point wasn't that the Xbox One wouldn't let you share games, just that it will require about a million asterisks attached. Microsoft itself isn't very clear on the details, there's a lot of back and forth going around about what qualifies as a friend, what kind of sharing can be done (SP vs MP games) and if it's even intended for anything but family.

Anyways it's too early to say how anything will compare, I doubt the publishers would allow Steam to do too much, much of Steams protection is based on publisher demand.

base line policy is here,http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/license

i have to say - other than the retarded phone home shit (that i think is probably needed for various bits of the flexibility) seem ok.

dont get me wrong; rather they stuck with the status quote, but its not that different to the way i use steam, i dont tend to keep my whole libary installed (i cant its fucking huge), and i dont really do my gaming on the road, so my steam is always signed in.

Everyone on Bluesnews is synical, get over it.
edit: i cant spell, this is my disclaimer.

Rolling I tend to agree with you. However the DRM chatter makes me just laugh.

The pain in the ass DRM is the software kind like limited activations, securerom, etc found in just about everything from Windows to Games, to attempt to circumvent pirating (which it doesn't), but ends up just hindering those of us who actually purchase media.

SO.... I haven't purchased media in about 10 years unless it was absolutely necessary.

Now hats off to companies who create software without any DRM whatsoever, it's been proven to increase sales not diminish them -- so it's its own reward and there's lots of us who appreciate it.

Any single player game requiring "always online" doesn't get bought from me. Because developers shouldn't be rewarded for doing something that is super annoying regardless of what it is classified as. For instance 'always online' is much less an issue for me than locked frames or forced narrow FOV's, but all of the above won't be purchased from me.

But having to hop online initially after a digital purchase is not an any normal person would complain about, it's petty to whine about something most of us do all the time without thinking - get online.

But hey, don't let me change your mind now -- you'll change it in a few years on your own when you eventually realize I was ahead of my time.
Yours truly,

Axis

When Steam finally stops asking if I 'want' to go on-line when I am offline and when Steam stops taking focus from the game app during app start and when Steam no longer requires an administrative level Windows™ service for its use, then Steam will be trying to gain me as a customer. Until then what it offers isn't really worth sharing or sharing at all.
