Out of the Blue

With the ball sitting there on a tee for them, Sony succeeded in pleasing most observers after announcing concrete details about the PS4, and how it will be more consumer-friendly in ways that the Xbox One will not be. So with the battle for the next generation officially a win for Sony, I think it's time to turn our attention to the next-next-generation. Will the PS5 continue it's lead over the next Xbox? Will the next Xbox actually be the Xbox Two? I'm already impatient for answers!

Microsoft will get spanked so hard, they'll quit consoles by the Xbox Two. Then they'll claim to care about PC gaming again, but they'll decide to put all their resources against their new gaming watch. And it will fail.

I watched it live. It was pretty damn epic. But the xbox has kinect! lol...

Fuck consoles though. Play on PC. Most games will come out for it and there's even some that are exclusive to a console, but also come out for PC.

Even I consider buying a PS 10!

Edit: And I'd even buy an XBox One or PS4 if keyboard/mouse controls were perfectly implemented.

seriously, whoever MS's market strategist is needs to be fired. they may have had a slim lead in the current gen, but their market position was never strong enough to force anything down anyone's throats. if they were ever going to get away with idiotic DRM, it HAD to be a tradeoff for something else. cheaper price comes to mind. but nooooo, they also feel like they can shove the green eyed hal9000 and an extra $100 down our gullets as well. really, just no benefit whatsoever. the only way they come back from this is if they have some massively awesome exclusives, or (more likely) backpedal fast enough to win the tour de france in reverse.

Nah as mentioned in the other thread they were very clear. It's basically the same as it is today and multiplayer is gated. I'm pretty ok with that considering the value proposition in PS+ and the fact that they didn't paywall the video features so if I stop gaming for a few months and just want to watch Netflix, I don't need to sub.

ok you have got to be trolling at this point, cuz sony were pretty unequivocal about the major points. sure the publishers might DRM their games themselves, but they already do that on current gen. it's not at a system level; there's really no dancing around that.

TED used to be great, but for the last several years, it has started sucking, hard. I watched an interview with a guy who was a presenter there and he says that it's now a cult.
This particular talk wasn't very good. He could have explained his actual points in about 30 seconds and it would have been much clearer. Waste of 12 minutes. His points weren't that interesting either. I mean, we should think positively? No shit? A lot of fluff and unwanted entertainment.

You should check out The Onion Talks sometime on Youtube, they absolutely eviscerate TED Talks and most of their criticism is spot on.

It wasn't my intent to imply the TED talk was educational or informative. I said, and thought, it was "worth sharing", apparently you disagree. I was pretty amused by it, as were the two people I shared it with directly. Oh well, different strokes and all that...

I'm not saying you're an idiot or an asshole. Only that there's strong indication that you are. I'm kidding :p

I feel that TED promises knowledge, science and stuff, but delivers fluff entertainment instead and that pisses me off a lot.

Smart people notice the "Disc Based Games" - sure things continue as they are for those.

I honestly can't remember the last time I purchased a physical copy of a game for my PC - if it's not Steam, or in some indie bundle, I don't bother (simply not joining multiple online delivery services, sorry late comers).

It does strike me as odd that "Console Culture" still hangs on to physical media, but as I was explaining to a friend.... Buy, Beat, Trade is the way consoles have been as long as I can remember (who you traded them to simply changed).

I expect that "trade" will go away with physical media. Whether or not anything similar pops up for the digital arena will be interesting to watch.
I should be coding.

For $100 cheaper it's a game console that most of what I read says is a more powerful platform and doesn't have the same DRM restrictions. Microsoft would have to rename the One to the 180 and backtrack on half the things they've established for the thing.

Most of what they announced is going to be on PC anyway, so the only game I'm kind of bummed about is Dead Rising 3 (assuming that it doesn't hit PC later). I like my consoles and would normally buy both eventually, but I'm just not seeing any reason as to why I would want a One. Even the name is annoying the crap out of me when I try to write about it. Xbone? XB1?

Console Wars are pretty stupid, but that's when it's a sort of Coke/Pepsi thing. For this new stuff it's like the competitors aren't even in agreement as to what market they're fighting for.

You know, I wouldn't have to repeat myself all the time if you people paid attention. What Sony said was self-applied. Everything they stated was very carefully crafted and constructed. There were no broad and sweeping statements. Certainly nothing that could be held against them legally.

1) They said the same thing as MS as it applies to their games you can trade them without fees, let friends play them, etc. They did NOT say bupkiss about what publishers may or may not do.

2) Note they did not state that for multiplayer games you now have to pay for it same as MS Gold. How do you think that would have went over at their press conference.

3) They say you don't need to login once every 24 hours? What about beyond that? They also said nothing about advertising, data mining, etc.

So in fact there's a whole bunch of shit they haven't said that they can still do to give it to the consumer sans lube. So yes, until you see EVERYTHING in black and white, the final costs, etc. etc. etc. I wouldn't be patting Sony on the back just yet. And the fact that they've snuck a few things in and are still so evasive flashes a big red WARNING!!! sign IMO. Just wait until the other shoe drops. There will be more shit coming down the pipe with this, bank on it.

Well, there's the problem. I've never expected to learn anything of significance from a TED talk and reality has in this case met my expectations most of the time.

The first TED talks were amazing. They use that as a way to attract viewers, but they completely lost their way. There are still some good talks here and there...
