Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients Announced

Soldak Entertainment announces Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients, an expansion for Drox Operative scheduled to come to their sci-fi RPG in Q3 of this year. Here's the deal:
Drox Operative: Invasion of the Ancients, the first expansion for Drox Operative, is almost here! Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.

Before the Drox ruled the galaxy, before they were even sentient, there were older races now known as the Ancients. Using their Operatives, the Drox crushed and enslaved most of these races. The rest fled known space. When the Drox turned on their own Operatives, the Drox were utterly destroyed. Newer races emerged and thrived in the power void, never knowing the menace waited. Seizing their chance, the Ancients are invading to take their rightful place in the galaxy, as rulers! Thirsting for revenge, the Ancients can't harm the extinct Drox, but they can crush the next best thing, the Drox Operatives.

The Ancient enemies are back! Can you defend the Drox Operative Guild and younger races against the Invasion of the Ancients?

I really should like this game. It's got a retro/StarControl feel to it with a lot of options... so it should punch all the right buttons. And, yet, I just can't get into it. I wish I could figure out why. Something about it just feels wrong...

Personally, I find the day-glo colors offputtish, the somewhat needlessly complicated power generation/usage confusing, the over abundance of information cluttering the UI as seemingly important events now impossible to respond to as they scroll away, quests scattered and tricky to complete, AI actions impossible to follow regarding victory conditions/objectives and last but not least, the need to crawl every last bit of weird oval space to map a sector.

The fun visuals and otherwise copious space-themed loot drops can't make up for the idiosyncratic game play quirks. I hope many try the updated and freely available demo... The level 6 cap in the demo does leave you wanting more but I don't want to have to go looking for it through all that fonky scrolling text!

Weird -- I see Din's Curse and Drox Operative as pretty much the same game, except that I found that the core concepts actually translated better in the form of a space game. I love the false sense of freedom it gives me and feeling like I'm just a mercenary pawn on a larger stage, working for whichever side I choose. (except for Cortex. Screw them.)

It's not only you. I'm a big fan of Din's Curse (and Depths of Peril before it), but I just couldn't get into Drox Operative. I wanted to like it, but for some reason, it just doesn't work for me, and I don't even know exactly why.
