Halo: Spartan Assault Announced for Windows 8

The Halo Website has the not-unexpected announcement of Halo: Spartan Assault, with the unexpected twist that this is a Windows game. However, this is not a typical installment in the series, it's a top-down shooter that's coming to Windows 8 and Windows Phones this July at a bargain price. Here's word:
Available only for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, "Halo: Spartan Assault" is a new top-down action shooter that brings a "Halo" video game to touch-based devices for the first time in franchise history. Developed by 343 Industries in conjunction with Vanguard Games, "Halo: Spartan Assault" provides an accessible, pick-up-and-play experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Set between the events of "Halo 3" and "Halo 4," "Halo: Spartan Assault" is a new chapter of the award-winning "Halo" universe that explores the first missions of the Spartan Ops program and dives deeper into the backstory of Human-Covenant wars. Play through the eyes of either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis stationed aboard the UNSC Infinity as they fight never-before-seen battles against Covenant forces.

With rich storytelling, intuitive controls, and best-in-class action, audio and graphics, "Halo: Spartan Assault" brings the epic scale and action of the "Halo" universe to mobile devices through unrivaled action and intensity.

Man that sounds good. Come to think of it, what was the story in Halo 3? Can't quite recall...

"We currently do not have plans to release any Halo titles on Steam, nor do we currently have plans to release a PC version of Halo 3," a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer.

Oh yeah that was it, I have no fucking idea. Nice one MS.

I'm still waiting for Microsoft's new and improved Solitaire. I wonder of there will be multiplayer?

Also, as mentioned, get a Nokia if you want Windows Phone. Their proprietary apps make them a much, much better value. Plus, their cameras rule.

Going from this to iOS on that iPod Touch (which I had to use for work reasons briefly) was a nightmare. Man, that thing was like stepping in a time machine. Yeah, it has functionality, but the whole thing is so obnoxious and annoying to use. The weak power of the Touch was responsible for some but not all of that. I really just feel like iOS is like stepping back to 2008. May not sound that long ago, but design has come so far. I guess it feels like moving back to a mouse without a scroll wheel.

Please dont lynch me, but Im thinking about getting a windows8 smartphone. They are dirt cheap, and look pretty & functional. (The OS makes sense on a mobile phone, who would have thought...) Should I rather go Android? This is my first smartphone and I dont really look forward to it but my old phone is dying as we speak.

I love my Nokia 928. The pictures it takes are fantastic, it does pretty much everything it does well, and I find the app selection fine.

But I'm not a huge app user.
And it still has issues. The lack of a centralized notification center is annoying, but it also doesn't let every app constantly inform you of useless crap the way iPhones want to.
You can't customize it as much as you can Android, but I have little interest in any of that anymore.
And multitasking sucks. You can't kill running apps other than backing through them. The fanboy response is "why would you want to? They don't take up memory," but that's idiocy. Sometimes I want something dead, and some apps (IMDB) require you to hit back like a hundred times to kill it. Other times you hit back, get to one screen, then hit back and get to the same screen you started at because it lets screens have multiple instances in the multitasking. Which drives me insane.

Otherwise? I love it. Simple, beautiful, fantastic photography ability, and fun. But... I've never owned anything else. I've used an iPod touch extensively and despise iOS. I do not have much love for the ugly design of most Android skins, either (which you can change, but will still be ugly.) I enjoy the liveliness of live tiles and the economy of design.

I will say, objectively, the best phone on the market is easily the HTC One. But the 928 does the things I want better than the One does. And, if it matters to you, it's $50 on Amazon.

whoops... forgot about that heh... I meant without Microsoft we would not have a mainstream PC gaming segment as we did and do. I just find it funny that the company that is the reason we have such a great Desktop PC gaming situation now does a 180 and acts completely against it. I find it actually absurd.. but that's MS for ya...

Wouldn't the maker of the Nr 1 gaming OS (Windows!) be more inclined to support the platform that os runs on? I don't get it...

Maybe they just want to diversify? If this was the only thing they do, then I would think that. But how many first party Windows games do you see? Perhaps mobile gaming is taking off...

Just realize how it is. MS, the literal creator of the PC gaming platform, does simply not make PC Games anymore. They make tablet and mobile games... because that market is so vastly lucrative (haha)

There were PCs before Windows. And they were sometimes used to play videogames. So no.
Anyway, I didn't know that Microsoft actually made that many games. Sure, they published some fun games like Midtown Madness and even some great games like Crimson Skies but actually making them?

Windows 8 is a tablet and mobile OS, and that's what they make these games for.... I think to MS it is more a side effect that real PC's can run Windows 8, I doubt this fact goes into any decision making at MS though.

It was bad enough when PC gamers were getting more and more console ports. Now we're getting tablet ports?

Didn't you read the quote from the other day? This is no tablet port, this is a microsoft top-notch hardcore game for PC. Here's that quote again:

“We have got everything from very, very casual games, like our very much improved and reimagined Solitaire, all the way to graphically complicated games like The Harvest,”

I know Windows 8 was a big step to dumb down Windows to more tablet like behavior, but a top down Halo? LOL

It depends on what you're going to do. If all you'll do is make a few calls, send a few texts and occasionally use data, Windows phone works fine.

If you're going to be a heavy smartphone user, Android or iOS is a far better bet than Windows Phone.

It's Vista & Halo 2 all over again.

Not even. MS thought that Halo 2 would be the killer app that made people buy Vista. I'm pretty sure no one at MS thinks Spartan Assault will make people buy Windows 8.

Of course not. 1/7th of the world's population will buy a TVRemoteBox after all. There won't be anyone still bothering with Windows for something as dirty as games.

Okay... if you're going to get a win8 phone, do yourself a favor and get the Nokia I think it is that has the cellphone camera of doom. The thing gives most point & shoot stand-alone cameras a run for their money. I can't review the Win8 phone as I've never used it.

That being said, for Android, you have two choices: A nexus 4 or wait. If you wait, at least the Galaxy 4 and possibly the HTC one are going pure android in the near future. Difficulty: 600 dollar price tag (nexus 4 is significantly cheaper, but is not LTE. An LTE Nexus 4 may be on the horizon though). However, it unchains you from the atrocious upgrade paths of handset makers, who have to take stock android and reprogram it with all the specific phone shit you don't need. HTC is especially notorious for being bad at updating handsets, which combined with the business rumors of HTC swirling around the bowl makes anything other than the vanilla android edition of the HTC One hard to recommend, which sucks because I have it and feel it's a superior handset to the Galaxy 4, which felt plastic-y and overloaded with gimmicks I didn't care about.
