EVE Online DDoS Attack

The EVE Online Facebook page has word that CCP has been forced to take EVE Online, DUST 514, and their websites offline due to a denial of service attack (thanks Massively). Here's word:
At 02:05 GMT June 2nd, CCP became aware of a significant and sustained distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS) against the Tranquility cluster (which houses EVE Online and DUST 514) and web servers.

Our policy in such cases is to mobilize a taskforce of internal and external experts to evaluate the situation. At 03:07 GMT, that group concluded that our best course of action was to go completely offline while we put in place mitigation plans.

While we initially reopened EVE Online and DUST 514, we have since re-evaluated. With the highest sense of precaution we have taken Tranquility and associated websites back down for further investigation and an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure. We will update you more frequently via our Twitter feed (www.twitter.com/eveonline), however, an extended service interruption of several hours is expected as this process should not be rushed.

A success story maybe... but they did that on the heads of other countries tax payers. They made no friends with that action.

It takes a very lame person to DDoS a video game.

Depends on your point of view. Online games are an excellent target for extortion, 100% of the companies revenue stream is affected.

Iceland's economic reputation is that of a success story where the government cared more about the people than the banks.
Unlike what is happening in Portugal,Spain,Italy,Greece.

The Icelandic default was always about your average joe who's personal savings disappeared thanks to bad decisions made by Icelandic banks, unlike the other incidents you mentioned where it was more about investors and large depositors. Iceland decided to screw the little people.

I suspect this is something that will become more common as dedicated game servers are so common plus it's also not very difficult to find software for DDoS attacks. I personally think it's time that game manufacturers are beginning to considering whether it was better before, when you yourself could host your own game server.

Maybe it is more aiming at iceland than at EVE... not many things in that country bring in international currencies since they pwned their international bank customers and refused to pay back international debts owed. The country (ie, Government) is having a pretty bad international reputation... so maybe that? Or a disgruntled eve gamer.

Could be that. It could also just be some hacker who either found an exploit in their system or just decided to do it so he could say "I took EVE down."

We missed a Destroyer Fleet event today because of the downtime. Was not happy. But hey, I bet despite it not being CCP's fault, we'll get free Skill Points to compensate us for the downtime.
