Pinball FX2 on Steam Next Week

The Pinball FX2 Website announces a Windows PC edition of this pinball game is coming to Steam on May 10th as a free download (thanks nin via Kotaku). Never fear, there will still be the chance to spend money on this, even if your PC doesn't have a slot for quarters, as the release will be supported by the release of the following six table packs, which will be $9.99 each:

  • Star Wars™ Pinball
  • Marvel Pinball
  • Marvel Pinball: Vengeance and Virtue
  • Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles
  • Pinball FX2 Core Collection
  • Zen Classics

http://www.futurepinball.com/ if anyone is interested. I've gotten my simulated pinball fix here for years. There's hundreds of tables available, editor to make your own, and it's free.

Looks like the link to their forums redirects back to the main page of the site, meaning that there's actually very few tables available.

http://www.pinsimdb.org/ has 1000+ Future Pinball tables. Just need to create a free account.

Probably would have to look into something like PinMAME instead, or just take my chances with the Pinball Arcade PC port (I have it for PS3/Vita and Android, and it's occasionally quirky, but not necessarily that buggy - but it seems like it's going to be leaps and bounds ahead of even the PS3 version graphically).

As far as Pinball FX2... way too "floaty" of physics. Not even close to simulation-grade, and a lot of their tables frankly suck, but there are a few gems amongst the lot.

It's certainly not better than the real thing but with some setups people have today you can hip-check them.

It's also a lot less exciting when you're not risking any quarters.

Nothing comes close to a real table for that authentic pinball experience anyways.

False. I suggest you look at Future Pinball (.com) Not only is it free and has a large number of user created tables, they include the very best tables that real pinball ever offered.

Were I more inclined I would turn my large screen TV on its side and stick controllers on the edge to use as flipper buttons. A large flat pinball table!

With future pinball's superior physics, infinite customization, LEDwiz add on for stunning eye candy and such tables as ST:TNG, The Addams Family and Jurassic Park you get a virtual pinball experience that is arguably better than the real thing.

All the drops and kicks and bumpers and lights work, the slope and number of balls can be edited, the audio is high quality and there are extras that the real tables could not have such as multi monitor support.

It's still not real physical pinball and doesn't play like it. If you don't have to hip-check the machine to play it properly instead of clicking a button it's not an authentic pinball experience, it's a simulated one no matter how well it's done.

That's not the job of greenlight. That's a side bonus that ends up being good for customers.

The job of greenlight is to reduce valve's uninteresting and unfun work of dealing with a million mostly crappy game submissions.

Valve even says as much in the press release announcing it.
http://store.steampowered.com/news/8367/

“Making the call to publish or not publish a title isn’t fun,” said Anna Sweet, at Valve. “Many times opinions vary and our internal jury is hung on a decision. But with the introduction of the Steam Workshop we realized an opportunity to enlist the community's help

With a flat management structure, no stockholders to be beholden to, a growing source of steady income, wheels on desk, and gabe's "obsession" with employee health, valve has different priorities than almost any other company. Probably one of the best places anywhere to work.

Love Pinball FX2. Even if its physics are noticeably deficient it's nonetheless very fun. Nothing comes close to a real table for that authentic pinball experience anyways.

An FX2 developer said it's because they're publishing through Microsoft now, and they're not subject to Greenlight.

I feel like the Pinball Arcade guys have demonstrated some pretty serious deficiencies in the past. When they're on their game, they're great, but at other times it's pretty dismal in gameplay, graphics, UI and bugs. Their ports can be especially bad, and release dates and quality on release can be a crapshoot.

Unfortunately, "some of the most hilariously bad pinball physics around" only means that FX2 isn't as good as the only other player in the market right now, Pinball Arcade. Pinball Arcade has a pretty big nostalgia advantage, but even so I'd be hesitant to put them head and shoulders above FX2.

I like Zen Pinball but The Pinball Arcade which is a scarily accurate simulation has to sit in the broken Greenlight system for months and this game, which has some of the most hilariously bad pinball physics around and also from a developer that's never been on Steam just sails right through? Ugh, Greenlight is such a busted mess.

Or Greenlight has done its job, and not waved through a random indie title that next to nobody would buy (based on the data Valve is seeing from that system). A proven successful game like this one has the clout to bypass that process.

Side note: accurate physics don't automatically make a pinball game fun to play.

Agreed, played the hell out of it on xbla. The Marvel tables were a blast, and I'm looking forward to the SW ones.

Also, if their FB page is correct, it doesn't have GFMFWL attached, despite being listed as "Microsoft Studios".

Fingers crossed!

So when is The Pinball Arcade coming to PC? That one has both the Twilight Zone and Medieval Madness tables available for it, which are the only 2 I give a damn about anymore.
