Thief Production Issues?

A post on Polygon calls the state of the Eidos Montreal's upcoming Thief reboot into question, saying they've learned from "anonymous sources familiar with the studio" that the project is suffering from inflated production costs and staff departures attributed to "corporate politics, creative confusion and a lack of publisher oversight." They say that the team has had to spend a lot of effort on creating press demos, and that "many programming tricks" are required to run their demo, going so far as to say "the vertical slice doesn't load inside Thief's current heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3," which is hard to understand (it makes it sound like the demo doesn't actually run). They say that Square Enix is growing concerned with this situation, noting that a portion of the recent GDC demo video was to be released to the public, but a source tells them this plan was scrapped because Square Enix was unhappy with the quality of the footage. They conclude noting the game is still slated to be shown off at E3 this June.

Reform looking glass studios and give it to them to do it. Problem solved

No no no they have to spend money to infect it with consolitis, that's the goal. It has to appeal to the modern gamer who likes action heavy violence.

No, it's not the same team as the DX:HR one.

Anyway, I hope the game pulls through. What I read of the public demo sounded promising, even if it wasn't fully representative of the game. Irrational did the same thing with Bioshock Infinite (which also went through numerous delays) but the final game ended up being good.

I can definitely confirm a report on this that it's very much true. I have a close friend who used to work for Eidos Montreal but he quit due to bad management and corporate politics. Their Thief game was rebooted already a number of times due to quality issues (the game/prototype did suck), and I mentioned it in Blues News comments even a couple years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be another situation like Duke Nukem Forever, which would be quite a shame for the Thief series really. Publisher SquareEnix has all the right to be unhappy and concerned.
Is this the same team which made Deus Ex HR?

I don't know but I could ask. I'd say probably not, because they were working on it at the same time they were doing Dues Ex HR so likely they're different teams working on them separately.

It's fine if the developers are competent. If they're not, you end up with 5 years of hell.

Sounds like karma issues to me.

That's what you get for taking games everyone loves and redesigning them to be all cool, mainstream & modern.

Oh and stop over-Desmondising the game!

"...creative confusion and a lack of publisher oversight."

Read: It's not yet enough optimized for controllers, has not enough qte, and some features and parts of the story have to be cut for later dlcs. And the game in general has three situations that need the player to be stealthy which have to be changed to run-and-gun-sequences. YAY!

Really, I think they did fine with the direction of Thief 3. A game like that with better graphics, a bigger city, and not broken up into separate levels every few yards to accommodate crappy console limitations would go over very well I think. Give me the choice between 1st and third person again, too.

What's the problem with this one?

They apparently made a game the publisher didn't like...

I feel they plan to capitalise on the market that praised Dishonored, which I thought had stealth gameplay poorly implemented. The qualities that made the previous Thief games unique, I suspect, are exactly what the developers fear will restrict sales.

Yeah, it has that feel to it doesn't it? They shouldn't be trying to reboot the series and reinvent Garret. If ain't broke, don't fix it.

Eidos, let's just re-release Thief 2 with improved graphics and AI and call it a day. I'll buy the shit tomorrow, thanks.
