Divinity: Original Sin Stretch Goals in Play

The Kickstarter for Divinity: Original Sin has now surpassed the $500K plateau, triggering the first stretch goal of a new area in Larian Studios' role-playing game. The next goal, "traits & talents" kicks in at $650K, but they also announce that henceforth for every 1000 backers they enlist past the 10,000 mark "the lair of the monster beneath Phantom Forest will become deeper and deeper," as "a new level full of pitfalls, threats and riddles will be added!"

This game brings up the nostalgia of Dungeon Siege but with a greater emphasis on story and role-playing. Larian have done well over the past couple of years, and their talents are definitely clear for all to see through Original Sin. I hope they're able to expand onto further projects outside of the Divinity universe following the release.

We have loads of new, comparatively big-budget RPGs coming that will have all the character development you could want... Original Sin is more about the replayable open-world sandbox and being able to do whatever you want in it. I'm glad they're spending more time on mechanics and playable content than custom dialogue you're only going to pay attention to the first time, if that. BTW, if you want to, you will be able to choose a personality type for your companion, so you don't have to play multiple sides of a conversation.

Also, if you're so bent on playing "solo" (you will be at a disadvantage), they've already illustrated that you could pretty much play each character as their own adventurer, off doing their own things simultaneously. Or with one frozen in time, lol.

Is the single player solo, or do you have to have a fricken AI tag-along?

You control both characters, so you are NEVER solo. Henchmen are AI, but they are optional...

I asked via email because of their website listing a paypal button for $65.. and the Dragon Commander + Divinity: OS Digital only pack is Kickstarter only and can't be gotten by paying with paypal.. MEH

Still undecided whether I want to support this at all.. guess I decide on the last day. Their movies with the MP and way the dialog is handled in SP (basically, your "2nd" character has only a script, no actual own dynamic personality) which basically cemented my fears that while COOP will be a blast, the SP portion seems to suffer massively from this. Seems that this will only even start to be a RPG once they reach the 800k stretch goal.. namely proper companions with personality and story/quests.

And the sad thing is, this 2nd character which you control, could have been made in a unique and creative way a proper NPC in SP. Which would add a lot more to the game...

Maybe I got spoiled by Baldurs Gate, but even if I control the party, I don't want a stupid "choose your companions personality" button. What the hell.... why don't they just write a proper personality for BOTH characters, and let us choose who "we" are at the start and have the second character change according to our choices in dialog and actions... but nooo.. it's gotta be COOP characters with 0 personality and dynamics... My worst fear whenever I hear RPG and COOP in 1 sentence....

This 1 thing is keeping me from pledging for this. Torment, Baldurs Gate 2... both showed how to do it RIGHT. And what Larian does here, seems like the easy and cheap cheat around the difficulty of writing proper companion interactions/banter. (Because of the stupid COOP focus, they can't even DO dynamic banter)

Glad they made at least one goal but can't see it going much further with 10 days left. A shame they didn't get more considering what they're putting out there. Still, can't wait to get it this fall.
