Batman: Arkham Origins Revealed

GameInformer.com has a preview of the cover story from the May issue of Game Informer Magazine, revealing Batman: Arkham Origins, an upcoming prequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City coming to Windows and consoles on October 25, 2013. They offer this trailer where the folks from WB Games Montreal show off some concept art while talking about it being "humbling" to work on a "franchise of this magnitude" as they are "standing on the shoulders of giants" in following the success of Rocksteady's previous Arkham games. They talk of this being the first Arkham game set on the streets of Gotham City where "we have eight of the best assassins in the world who have come together in Gotham City on one night, Christmas Eve of all nights, to kill The Bat." The print edition of the magazine should be in subscribers hands in a couple of weeks, and in their Batman: Arkham Origins Hub will be home to details about the game they will share online. In the meantime, here's how they describe what they know:
Warner Bros. Games Montreal has taken the mantle of the bat from Rocksteady Studios this time around for Batman: Arkham Origins. WB Montreal has full access to Rocksteady's custom modified Unreal engine to capture the look and feel of the Arkhamverse. As the title suggests, the game takes place years before both of the previous Arkham titles when a young, unrefined Batman encounters many supervillains for the first time. On our full cover image below, fans will recognize the assassin Deathstroke, who appears for the very first time in a core Arkham game.

I suspect, based on nothing concrete, that taking the new batman out of rocksteady's hands was more to do with lowest bidder winning the development bid.

Right...that's why the rumor has it that Rocksteady is working on another game for Warner. Another Batman game, possibly even a Justice League game, possibly to tie in with the JC movie they are working on.

Marketing says... It's time for an Origins game. Later at a company dinner "We so smart, Origins... Genius!", pats on back, raises all around.

As for the game itself, no doubt a good series.

I suspect, based on nothing concrete, that taking the new batman out of rocksteady's hands was more to do with lowest bidder winning the development bid. Rocksteady proved they had what it took but with 2 successful batman games, they wanted some good money for the 3rd after their proven succes and instead warner brothers just sold it to someone who bid lower, and that is this unknown unproved developer called warner brothers games montreal.

Eidos was working on one about 8 years ago but it was a piece of shit and Squeenix officially killed the project a few years ago.

Holy crap...if SE cancelled it.....it must really have sucked.

Batman's Creed : The Bat-ening

My prediction is this will be of about the quality of the Spiderman games that tried to copycat Rocksteady.

Lucky for me I'm more interested in the studio's creative voice than the character (three movies and two games leave me a little batigued).

Apparently Paul Dini is also not involved in this Batman game (he wrote the first two Arkhams). This game has "wait until after reviews" signs all over it.

Haven't they milked Arkham enough? Asylum was cool, City was a stretch...

They should get a GTA-like engine and put you in Gotham, so you can rip around town in the bat mobile and rescue people, etc.

That's something I've wanted since the beginning, actually. Would be a nice reboot if they are using a different dev.

Unless the week after release consensus is that the games suck I will definitely be picking this up on Vita and most likely be picking this up on PS3. I don't do pre-orders or Day One purchases much anymore, so I am not worried about not getting my monies worth. Provided they don't try to reinvent the wheel I am optimistic that these will turn out fine. Maybe I am not convinced they will, but I am optimistic.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if it was a case where Rocksteady was working on a proper sequel. There were more than enough hints about what was planned for the next storyline to follow Arkham City through side missions and secret radio signals and locations in Arkham City itself. It would seem strange to basically spell out the premise of the next chapter, and then completely toss that out in favour of a title on which Rocksteady isn't involved and which also doesn't involve those clues.

If anything I suspect that the hope is that this other team manages to make something rather well received; and then they can leapfrog with Rocksteady on Batman titles to narrow the amount of time between releases of the franchise.

Looks like this is where Batman jumps the shark.

I can't blame Rocksteady though. They made the best Batman game of all time, followed it up by blowing it out of the water, and now they probably want to do something else.

Rocksteady has another Batman game coming out next year.

Depending on who you listen to, it's either a Batman origin game set in the 50s (a project that may have become this), a Justice League game, or a TMNT game.

If its not Rocksteady they might as well not release it. This series is dead, thanks WB! Prototype and Hulk are balls, no hope for this prequel.

Not really sure what to make of this, I'll wait for more info. It would be pretty hard to top Arkham City though and I figured the only way to go after it would be down.

So no Rocksteady and this....

Heading up the vision for Arkham Origins is creative director Eric Holmes, known for being the lead designer of open world action hits The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype. A self-professed lover of comics, Holmes even wrote the miniseries Transformers: Megatron Origin for IDW.

does not fill me with confidence. Quite the opposite in fact. I'm curious if WB is trying this in-house to save money and that's why Rocksteady isn't doing it.

And playing the Flash would be a hoot. It was like playing a speedster in CoX. There's no shortage of heroes it'd be fun to take a stab at for games of the caliber of Bats Arkham.
