I'm not a computer artist myself but my friend is one and tells me it requires a legion of artists and modelers to create the kinds of high resolution, detailed assets we see in everyday AAA games. Part of the reason we see so much spritework for the indie scene is the ease of creation supposedly. I will press him for more detail next time I see him.

Back to the Wii U, you have to wonder what EA demanded from Nintendo and how that rumored spat got started. I suspect it was related to used games and DLC. EA went from "Imagine Battlefield on the Wii U controller!" to not shipping a single Wii U title in the next two years.

I've never understood this claim. Granted, my experance with asset creation is limited to a bit of modding here and there, but in what I have done it's always been harder to target lower end hardware. I mean it's easy to make models look good when you can throw however many polygons you want into them and texture them with as high of resolution texture as you like, but when trying to keep things running smooth on lesser hardware it takes more work ceate something which is asteticly pleasing.

Well, if they did have one for the WiiU, I might actually consider a purchase. I don't know when I'd play it, but that would be very tempting...

Yeah that was the Gamecube one. Fast, smooth, pretty, deep, great soundtrack, a cheesy storyline and hard as hell. One of my favorite racers ever.

Looks like a Gameboy Advance F-Zero from 2004 is the last one to come out. Geez didn't realize its been that long.

I was thinking the other day about how awesome GX was. Just....just don't make it as difficult. That one was hardcore.

Was that the gamecube one? I wasn't very good at it, but it was beautiful to look at, much less play...I guess that's the most recent one?

If BF4 can run on a crappy PS3 & xbox 360 then it could easily run on a Wii U.

Pretty much this. I buy Nintendo consoles for more then just those two, but not much more. Anything after Mario/Zelda/Metroid is a bonus.

very good points Hellbinder about why devs are not bothering with wiiU development.

The lower end hardware could work in their favor since dev costs are so insane for higher quality assets. Xenoblade barely suffered for it. It could be a nice middle ground for publishers and developers who don't want to spend 20+m but yeah they definitely need to get the system cheaper. An SKU without the tablet controller would be an easy way to accomplish that. I know they don't want to fragment the user base and development efforts but I simply don't want the thing and bumps up the cost quite a bit.

I'll pick one up but only when the system is cheaper. I still enjoy Nintendo games but not enough to justify the current console price.

I decided to get a wii-u for a few reasons.

It is a shame that its not getting better support. there is no reason not to put BF4 on it. The best thing wii-u has going for it is the ability to play the game on the controller pad without a tv.

Or games like black opps being able to play 2 player without spit screen with one person on the TV and the other on the controller.

The problem is they simply made a colossal mistake on the hardware. It should have at least a quad core processor and 3G of ram. These devs know that Xbox and PS4 are going to be nearly identical hardware wise as will the PC be also. Its a lot of extra work to port it over to the Wii-u with its xbox 360 processor and 1g ram.

It's a shame Nintendo spent their big Wii/DS war chest on developing the Wii U. It's an anchor right now, they're just lucky the 3DS is finally selling like gangbusters otherwise they'd be in serious trouble. The window of opportunity they were hoping to hit for the Wii U is pretty much shuttered with both next gen consoles launching this year. They will have to work very hard to convert Wii owners over and are going to need to dump truckloads of cash into first party development to get there.

You can't launch a console without a lot of great software anymore, hopefully Sony and Microsoft heed that lesson too.
