This. What Bioshock did well was atmosphere and narrative. Once you get past that (which takes different amounts of time per individual), the actual mechanics were repetitive and uninspired for the most part. Once you lose the narrative (once again YMMV), the game really offers no reason to continue (or replay).
I give the developers full marks for their vision and storytelling. The actual
game... meh...
