Unreal Engine 4 Teaser

GameTrailers now offers a teaser video for an Unreal Engine 4 demo from GDC, and word is we can expect a fuller version on Friday. It's hard to imagine a lesser version, as this runs all of 11 seconds, but at least the unskippable ad that preceded it only ran 30 seconds.

There is more UE4 footage here.

Is there another mirror for that video? They seemed to have taken it down already.

so they have basically caught up to engine technology a year ago. but even that is pretty un awe inspiring.

Its ok by me as im not a graphics whore. Currently playing resident evil 4 Wii edition and enjoying it a lot.

having said that, graphic engines seem to have hit a plateau and run out of ideas. it almost feels like after all the volumetric/ray/specular/buppy blah blah stuff what we really need is a new dose of good old fashioned super high rez textures.

Worst. Teaser. Ever.

But seriously, what little footage there was was pretty unimpressive. We've seen smoke and dynamic lighting before; the physics looked off; the level of detail wasn't any better than current gen titles. I know the next-gen consoles aren't particularly beefy spec wise but, even so, I was expecting more.

Hopefully the full video will be more compelling.

Ue3 sucked so they better step up here.

What didn't you like and what engines did you feel were better?

Or is this one of those standard "UE3 sucks but I have nothing to back it up with" arguments?

Take a look at TWI who made red orchestra sequel aka 2. They ran into so many problems due to engine compared to the old ue engine. Took them about year of waiting for epic to fix issues and it still have issues. Now more and more devs learning about ue3 limitations, look at jackboot games who are making ww2 game following their ro1 mod darkest hour. Even though they won ue3 license through contest long ago they still switched to cryengine 3 because ue3 is inferior in some of the aspects they want to have in Fausting Europa game. UE3 maybe ok for a consolish type of engine but when it comes to someone making a more complicated game with higher requirements of the physics and world they run into problems fast.

Let's start with texture pop-up, very few games that used the engine properly dealt with that issue.

You really have to work hard to remove the feeling that you're playing a mod for Unreal Tournament 3 and way too many games just felt like lazy game developers recycling the included assets with the dev kit over and over again.

The physics in the engine always felt like a "good enough" check box feature and always tainted games in a bad way, most egregiously with anything trying to implement vehicles were just plain awful 90% of the time.

Those are some of my gripes, I can only think of a few games that overcame the deficiencies - Mirrors Edge for example and DICE replaced a lot of the subsystems included by default. Just replacing the lighting was a huge improvement.

That's all fair - I know what you mean about the texture streaming issues in particular, although it was never really an issue for me as I played most multiplatform UE3 games on my PC.

I think it's a bit extreme to say the engine "sucked" - it handled large outdoor environments very well and afforded a lot of games some very cool graphical and cinematic effects at good speeds. I can't disagree with the points outlined though.

What exactly sucked about it? Given the number of games that leveraged it, I thought it was working pretty well for it's generation.

More graphics fluff that you'll want to disable in some .ini buried in the install folder.

They're really going to push tessellation as a massive, huge deal because console gamers haven't experienced it at all.

meanwhile the enemy AI will still respond like a box of rocks.

This made those BF4 teasers look like a full length movie
They should have just put up a screenshot and say more on Friday or something.
Either way this is kind of like that facial demo Nvidia had last week. Looks cool but it is just a tech demo not a game, so not much to get excited about imo, and a tech demo certainly doesn't need a teaser.

The best part of the 5-second teaser to the teaser is the comments.
Absolutely hilarious:

well, that was the most literal interpretation of the word 'teaser' I've ever seen

Tremendous footage, it kept me at the edge of my seat! Will the bad guys catch our leather strap dark hero? Find out in the next 5 seconds episode of technology jerkwad! Powered by Unreal 4!! Because Unreal 3 is for poor people!

I remember when Unreal Engine 3 was supposed to be awesome (see the Samaritan demo) but I'm guessing that they only used it to make games that could run on consoles.
