POE Boasts 2M Players; Patch Details; Supporter Packs Update

Grinding Gear Games announces that Path of Exile now has more than two million registered accounts since the action/RPG entered open beta testing in January. "We're really pleased with Path of Exile's reception. It blew our expectations out of the water and continues to grow every day," responds Chris Wilson, producer for Grinding Gear Games. "The continued feedback and support from our fans has been great. We expect to add a lot of new content and features during the Open Beta period as we approach full release later this year." They also continue to update the open beta on a weekly basis and just this morning posted a lengthy update outlining plans for the version 0.10.4 content update they plan on releasing next week as well as patch notes for a new version 0.10.3B hotfix that launched yesterday. Next week's patch will introduce a new player skill and four new unique items, offering a teaser image to whet appetites. Finally, they have an update about shipments of physical goods from closed beta supporter packs along with the question of whether players would welcome a new set of such rewards for open beta supporters:
Many people haven't yet received the physical goods from the supporter packs that they ordered towards the end of Closed Beta (or in the case of some of the more crazy signing requests, earlier in the Closed Beta). Our bulk signing of physical goods was delayed by the launch of the Open Beta, but we now have signing stations set up at the office again and a lot of shirts/posters/DVDs/CDs are getting signed each day. We have also replenished our stocks of the manufactured physical goods required for these packs and are packaging/shipping as many as we can per day. Thanks very much for your patience!

Quick question: How much interest is there in the return of physical goods supporter packs for Open Beta that have different contents than the Closed Beta ones? We've been holding off on pursuing this idea until we have fulfilled the orders that people have been patiently waiting for from Closed Beta. I get more and more mail about this per day from excited fans who want to purchase packs that include physical merchandise (and exclusive pets).

They had a couple Cutthroat league tests about 8 months ago - and yes it was extremely fun.. Once I dominated, once I couldn't get out of the starter areas due to being pk'd over and over.

PoE is not an "I'm an insta-god" game like almost every arpg since d2. The people who are turned off on PoE are often used to handholding easy-mode arpgs and sum it up to some other reason due to sucking or not willing to understand the many mulch-faceted mechanics. So cutthroat leagues plays perfectly into what the base will enjoy, it just needs alot of testing still.
Yours truly,

I was going to pass this, then I read about Cutthroat League. Open PvP, drop all items on death. I'm a hardcore fan of this environment, Dread Lord Ultima Online and Asherons Call Darktide were my favorite MMO days. Unfortunately this league isn't available yet, will have to check back later.

I backed Grim Dawn, so definitely looking forward to that one. Kickstarter games are practically the only ones I'm really excited about at this point. Should start seeing some of the good ones later this year.

Just got back into PoE. Hadn't played since a little while before OB started. Got a lvl 36 ranger going right now, almost done with Act 3. Been having terrible luck with drops though, which is why I'm kind of over-leveled at this point. Having fun with it though. Act 3 is definitely a lot different than the first 2 acts, which I'd played through many times already.

Yup, how many people have been moaning for a Titan Quest 3? And the closest thing we're ever gonna get only had 12k backers.

I think the Titan Quest expansion left a lot of bad tastes in people's mouths. I know it did for me. And one of the devs explained that it wasn't their fault that they couldn't fix it, which is fine, but then someone posted something from the lead dev on Grim Dawn that they "thought they had fixed the rubberbanding", and that really made me stay the hell away.

If the rubberbanding that ruined both TQ and its expansion has any chance of coming back in their next game, I want no part of it.

Even so, I'm not sure that Titan Quest as an IP is really worth anything. It was all just standard mythology kind of thrown together and churned into an ARPG. A good one, don't get me wrong, but the setting itself was kinda "eh".

The people that were really 'moaning' for a TQ3 backed Grim Dawn a year before KS suddenly got popular...

Also, even 12k would not be anything to scoff at...

Not gonna happen, but the main guy from the Titan Quest studio already Kickstarted a new ARPG that should be in alpha soon with a release before the end of the year: Grim Dawn

Now you have me wondering WTF happened to that IP, though... We didn't hear anything about that when THQ went kablooey, did we?

Grim Dawn will:
•Be DRM free!
•Join up with friends in coop-multiplayer through online match-making or play over LAN and experience the full game together.

An upcoming ARPG that will not require an internet connection... will have to support these guys.

As much as I enjoyed various aspects of TQ.. I can't think of any of it's IP not being public domain (as in, basic mythology)... Though, I do realize that names sell, so perhaps that's the major factor...

You sound like you're falling into the ol' trap of buying stuff and never finishing previous games. My new rule is that I try to make sure I only ever rotate three games at a time, no matter what else is coming out. At least one of them must be a non-MP game and I have finish at least one of them a month. It's working out pretty well, I'm finally making a dent in my backlog. Plus I'm skipping a lot of new titles and getting them cheaper later. The only time I make an exception is for a true deal (ie $45 for Tomb Raider and Bioshock Infinite).

Oh, I'm not falling into that. I FELL into that years ago.

It's fine. One day the PC market is going to go full EA, and at that point I'm just going to stop buying games. And then I have plenty to tide me over till I die.

Yeah I bought the $20 premium tab bundle too, I needed to support them for all the time I've spent in game. I might buy more but the cosmetic effects are pretty underwhelming. Their ethical microtransaction system really is painless from a player's point of view though, I hope we see some figures showing GGG's making good money from this game. It would be a shame if they did everything right and almost no one gave them money and the conclusion was that companies do need to fuck over the consumer to make any profit.

This is actually the reason why I decided to spend 25 bucks on this. It was the first free2play game that I saw where none of the microtransactions had ANY impact on gameplay (well, maybe except for the depot limitation but cluttering up your depot is probably not a good idea anyway).
Now we donce.
