There are just a lot of things a killer does, that the rest of us do to.

Goes for potential killers too. 1 % of the human population are psychopathic, but there aren't 3 million serial killers running around.

Most of them just become CEOs...

Her FBI Codename was "Captain Obvious".

Seriously though, all the stats support the conclusion that violent media does not cause violent behaviour, but may exacerbate a person prone to violent behaviour. The typical person to come to the conclusion that games cause violence (or think tank/research group etc) always have a subjective axe to grind on the issue. Nothing new here either.

But I think it goes further than that, violent gaming and media are often, at least in my experience, a cathartic release from the frustrations of the world.

Much easier to light up the torches, hoist the pitchforks and blame videogames.

on the nose bro. i strongly suspect that those fat cats at the NRA know full well that they're blowing smoke up everyone's asses. after the shooting they sat around a large wooden table smoking pipes and discussing not, 'how to avert this in the future', but rather, 'how do we stop people from blaming guns'. answer; rush out and blame something else. that way, attention is diverted and no knee-jerk strong anti-firearms laws are quickly passed. and it appears they've succeeded.

you can't ban the violence in people's hearts, so the next best thing is to take away their most effective tools. i've always been an individual rights kinda person, but in this case, guns are just too dangerous to justify private ownership.

Cant argue with you on that point, but they will grab whatever they can in the heat of the moment. That includes sharp objects.

The same day as Sandy Hook, there was crazy guy in China who attacked a preschool. Since he didn't have access to a gun, he used a knife. 20 people injured, but no one died. Certainly we can agree that these things aren't the same and shouldn't be treated equally.

Still its the person choosing to wield a knife or gun who is the problem, not the object itself. Most gun crimes in the US are done with handguns, which aren't fully automatic and don't have high capacity clips.

I'm still trying to figure out how knee jerk bans on things is supposed to be some "solution"

You will be convinced video games cause violence if the first thing you hear about video games and violence is someone on tv speaking against them with a little bit of authority.
Likewise if you are part of the club you will never be convinced, just like the NRA.

The studies lean towards no but its not exhaustive.

I really don't like the "we might as well ban sharp objects" argument specifically every time it gets thrown into a discussion like this.

I just wish there was some gigantic list of arguments that we can refer to. "Sorry, that has already been covered in the societally accepted GLoA article 152:A item 13 - false equivalency." Maybe we would actually get something done besides rehash the same nonsense debates ad-infinitum every time a class full of 5 year olds gets gunned down. I think sites like snopes and politifact are as close to that as we'll ever get and people even question those as being biased.

I feel like certain lobbyist groups would be out of business in one or two election cycles if we could just stop the spread of misinformation and nonsense debate points. Except that I'm sure they would pay a lot of money to have a hand in writing the list. And thus fox news was born...

Yep,

Video games don’t cause violence, only people that have no sense of what’s right or wrong do.

Just like blaming the gun for killing someone, the gun didn’t pull the trigger its self, the person wielding it did. All of these mechanisms are just an outlet that people use as an excuse to blame rather than looking into the real issue.

Yup, this is why I'm in favor of letting people own grenade launchers and any country that wants them to have nuclear missiles. As long as they know right from wrong.

The things that killers have in common with one another, it's curious that they are stuck on videogames being even partially the cause. I would like to dub this, "The Coulter Phenomenon" - people don't REALLY think these things, there are just plenty of people that will say them (true or not) to sell books, get on TV to promote their books, etc, to get rich. End of story.

Having said that, access to a gun in a moment of passion is not a good thing. Despite what the NRA would have you think, there are more girlfriend vs boyfriend, wife vs husband arguments daily than home invasions in a year; ie, guns are more likely to be used in a situation where they shouldn't be used than one where they should.

(that wasn't intended to be a factual statement, btw, to quote senator Jon Kyl. Just a common sense assumption to make a point.)
