Obsidian on Fallout: New Vegas 2 Prospects

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart comments to Rock, Paper, Shotgun on the possibilities of revisiting the Fallout series after the studio created the well-received Fallout New Vegas. He expresses enthusiasm for returning to the property the former Black Isle developers helped originate, though also notes that the current "disruption of the industry" caused by the life-support phase of the console cycle is an obstacle to making deals with publishers, in spite of their friendly relationship with Fallout owner Bethesda Softworks. Caution aside, he discusses how it would make sense for them to create another west coast version of the Fallout setting, since they are a west coast studio. RPS caps this by paraphrasing a response from Bethesda's Todd Howard, who expresses cautious enthusiasm for another spin of the New Vegas wheel. They promise to publish their complete interview with Urquhart "very, very soon." Thanks nin.

I'm sure this will spark the inevitable FO3 vs NV debate but for me, why not have both? They're already working on FO4 and I'd love to see a NV2 or equivalent. Hell do a new setting for fun. NV had some great quests and quality writing, I'm not terribly attached to the actual setting though.

I'd love to see Obsidian do another Fallout, but the last thing I want is a return to New Vegas. As a setting, I thought it was boring and underwhelming.

But let them do a Fallout: Portland or Seattle or something, and hells yeah. (though if I had to choose, I'd rather see them do a new Star Wars RPG.)

id be interested in a far-future Fallout setting.. where people are only a few decades away from being nationalized, etc - like a mostly restored wasteland, with unexplored weirdness just under the surface

i like that sort of combo ancient/futuristic type settings.. kinda like that anime "Alexander" or some of the Final Fantasy stuff (in theory)

i think it could be cool to see the post-apoc wasteland type setting where it is post-post-post-apoc

Unless they use a new engine, I am not sure how interested I would be.

NV was great but the engine was showing its age in every. possible. way.

I assume they would get to work with bethesda's latest version, which is based off the Skyrim engine. Still the old formats underneath, but definitely a helluva lot optimized and rewritten.

Yes please! Don't even care if this still uses the Gamebryo engine. Just need another RPG with great writing and genuinely open-ended gameplay.

The Vanilla version of Fallout3, although fantastic, does not show the full potential of the Gamebryo engine. Check out some of these mods here at Fallout3NexusMods. Some Fallout3 gamers are purists, but some aren't; however, there are some awesome mods here from the community. Just to name a few, especially check outt:

CINEMATECH - Film Grains and Styles
IMAGINATOR - Visual Control Device
DYNAVISION - Dynamic Depth of Field

I absolutely do not want a New Vegas 2. I do, however, absolutely want another Fallout from Obsidian.

The New Vegas area is done. Find another area to tell a story about, and name it that. As much as I loved Baldur's Gate 2, it was pretty idiotic that you never even came close to the city, let alone going there.

Yeah, yeah, nitpicky, but still... The Fallout name itself is enough to continue the brand, naming it New Vegas 2 wouldn't help. And definitely setting it in New Vegas again would be a mistake.

I think when they were saying "New Vegas 2" they probably meant "Fallout in the west 2". I don't think they'd revisit the exact same area. I am totally down for that.

A Fallout based on the latest Skyrim engine would make me happy. I still play New Vegas but it is definitely creaky software.

Same here. Played everything around the city, but after going in, I stopped playing. I really liked DC, though. I had fun crawling through subways and destroyed buildings.

I guess I pretty much agree with the consensus here. Make a new Fallout game with the Skyrim engine and don't set it in New Vegas. I lost count of how much time I spent with FONV. I'd be all over another game like that.

Not sure what city or area would make a good setting. No interest in LA, so what's left in the west? Portland, Seattle and SF have been mentioned. Denver? SLC?

Edit: I want to jump back into Skyrim to play through the DLC now, but I know it's going to take a lot of time to update my mods and look into some of the new ones.

There is not a huge difference between the Skyrim engine and what they used for the Fallout games... just tweaks and updates. You can achieve similar results with their older games by simply editing the ini files.

It's a huge clunky piece of crap engine though, and needs to be scrapped.

When things like physics are tied to vsync, and you have to basically re-script half the damn quests in the console by hand to make them work... it's time for a change. This problem did NOT go away in Skyrim, it only got worse.

That doesn't even touch on my biggest gripe (for every game in this vein since oblivion), which is their leveling/skills system. You can go everywhere and do everything in the game at level 5, without fear of where I am wandering... and the "challenge" never even remotely increases once in the next 100+ hours of gameplay... I just don't get it.

It was a problem in their other games but in NV you definitely do have to take care of where you're wandering at low levels. That aside, I agree with you that the engine is really hackey and a pain to work with. I didn't really have an appreciation for how messed up it was until I started doing some CK stuff, after a few months of that I don't know they cobble it all together into a game.
