Ships Ahoy - Aliens: Colonial Marines

SEGA announces that Aliens: Colonial Marines is now available worldwide, offering a new first-person shooter set in the Aliens sci-fi setting for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a WiiU edition coming at some future date. Here's the official launch trailer for the game, and here's word:
SEGA® of America, Inc., SEGA® Europe Ltd., Gearbox Software and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products® today announced that its highly buzzed-about blockbuster Aliens™: Colonial Marines video game is now available on store shelves across the globe for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows® PC. A release date for the announced Wii U™ version will be revealed at a later time.

Pitting players against the universe’s deadliest killing machine, the Xenomorph, Aliens: Colonial Marines is the official video game continuation to one of Sci-Fi’s most renowned movie franchises. As the authentic addition to the ALIENS canon, the game’s stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action will deliver a breathtakingly immersive four-player drop-in drop-out cooperative campaign and four expansive competitive multiplayer modes – Escape, Team Deathmath, Survivor and Extermination.
The critical reception for the game so far has been pretty negative, and Eurogamer notes a this tweet and this one from sleuth superannuation pointing to this post from last year that he disregarded at the time. This includes a comment from someone claiming to be an ex-developer on the project saying at the time development had "been a total train wreck," and that Gearbox was only developing the multiplayer portion of a game primarily designed by TimeGate Studios.

Not going to read the entire wall there but I will just respond to this. Everyone has different taste, acting like everyone is out to get this game because you happen to like it isn't going to change anyones mind. No one was out to bash you or this game, you got way too personally invested in the outcome. I don't doubt that if the game actually kicked you in the nuts that you still would have professed your love for it, you haven't been objective pretty much from the start. People love Aliens and just wanted a good Aliens game, I think if anything they'd be more forgiving. I don't know why it matters so much to you that other people share your feelings about this game.

For $5 down the road maybe I'll appreciate a rough romp through this, for $60 though I think there's been enough agreement from too many disconnected parties for me to ignore it.

So people made this a top selling preordered game on steam? This is a major reason why they keep making them because people keep buying this shit.

Also beware of the review embargo that is lifted when the game ships but not before.

Yep, they push it out the door because they know that pre-orders will cover (most of) their development costs.

To everyone who pre-orders:

1) Stop it.
2) If you notice no reviews coming out several days before the game is due, cancel your pre-order. Because odds are good you're going to get raped, and if you keep pre-ordering, assholes like Randy Pitchford are going to keep delivering shit like this.

Like Doom, though, that atmosphere was very much a product of technical limitations. I'm not as convinced that silence and combat noise would go as well now.

But I'd love to see someone try.

I have refrained from posting anything here, because most of you have come to the conclusion without even playing one second of the game that it’s bad. I keep reading, I heard, or I read or I had a feeling. Okay, so now everyone bases their gut feeling off of hearsay. I can tell you now after playing Coop last night that this game is being unfairly reviewed and bashed on.

Everyone I played with last night all said the same thing, they cannot understand where all of the hatred for this game is coming from. We played through the first half of the game; it took us 4 hours to get through that. And All I can say is that I was not disappointed at all with what I saw or experienced.
Did I see AI acting Quirky or getting stuck? No! Was the AI attacking us like they should be, yes!

Did we see horrible 2005 looking graphics, again NO! Now, I have heard that the console version has issues, but we saw none of those. I did not see the guy giving CPR to the NPC head. Can stuff f like that happen, sure. It’s a scripted event, sometimes the placement gets moved or this could have been caused by the player pushing on the NPC too. I have seen this happen.

The thing I really liked were the environments; I really think GB got this down really well. The Colony looked great, and the sewers were pretty awesome looking, and creepy. There were a lot of areas that were straight out of the movie. The Alien walls looked right on par with how you would expect them to be from the movie. The Music was perfect, right out of the movie. A lof the weapons were perfect, the pulse rifle sound was exactly like it should be. I know the ones in AVP 2010 were not, they all sounded different. Same goes for the Smartgun it was as it should be.

We played the game on Ultimate Badass mode, and the Aliens were no joke, we died at least 30 times that I can remember, we felt that we wanted to have the aliens as deadly as possible and they did not disappoint. I’m not going to get in to a debate with you all about this, and I’m not going to argue with you all, if you hate the game based on hearsay then so be it. That’s your choice. All I can say is that the reviewers did not review this game correctly, nor did they give this game a chance.

I want to point out an area that I saw a video on, with a suicide alien I saw. When I saw the video I was like, WTF, why did he not attack and why is he upright, well after playing through that area. I now know why, and now makes sense to me. This is a special alien and this is the way they are designed. It’s a mutated version of them from the Processor blast.

When I read someone saying they played it for three mins and that was it. I have to wonder what kind of gamer you really are. There is no way anyone can properly determine that this is a good game after three mins. I also want to point out another comment about the Aliens and there only being 5 points to shot at and hit. This comment made no sense to me, there are more than 5 points to attack an Alien, and you can shot off their heads, arms, and legs. All of this will causes platter acid damage if you are nearby. Were you expecting to shoot off their fingers?

All I can say is that we had a great time playing the game last night. I had to see for myself if all this hearsay was true, and I found out for myself that it was not. The graphics are no way near as bad as some are trying to make this out to be, the textures were not top notch but they were nowhere near low grade either as many are trying to make them out to be. The MP Coop was very stable, we had not one issues in the four hours of anyone getting disconnected or crashing. Is the game perfect, no! But it’s what I was hoping it would be a fun game that I can enjoy playing Coop with friends.

Hate the game or love it, there will always be two sides, but all I know is that the reviewers did not give this game a chance, and I do like this game better over the AVP 2010.

I have seen worsts game than this one get better reviews. I’m not going to respond to the critics, this will lead nowhere. This is what I felt about the game and I personally like this game and so did many others I talked to and played with.

I know some of you were wondering where I was just so you can jump on the bash Darks bandwagon. Again, this is the last you will hear from me on this. I personally feel that if many of you at a later date go back and play this game will have a different opinion about the game and feel that you were unjust in your comments. Then again, maybe not for some of you. But thats how it goes. All I know is that I played it and many of you did not, so that makes me the better judge right now on the game.

My personal take is that the game deserves at least a 7.8

All they had to do was remake AVP99 with modern graphics and they'd have had a winner. That was a game that had tension, that had atmosphere, that had great gameplay, that was faithful to the franchises, that had great multiplayer.

I knew the lack of details regarding the PC version were a warning sign, just like all the terrible preview videos. The earlier E3 walkthrough looked quite promising, yet now there are accusations of a bait-and-switch. Gearbox has absolutely no consistency when it comes to releases. I can understand taking on Duke Nukem Forever as even though most people knew it was bad there were still a lot interested in checking it out just for curiosity's sake but the Alien franchise is highly regarded and they seriously overhyped the game.

It doesn't matter how many patches they release now the game will always be considered a disaster.

Wow. Just Wow.

I had a feeling it might not be a good game but per all I have read here and at RPS ;OMG the pain it's evidently much worse than the last entry from SEGA,and for many more reasons than just my concerns about pre-released DLC and no map editor.

At the very least I am sure there will be patches to correct some bugs/glitches, but I still feel this steaming pile of tripe isn't worth more than $9.99 in the bargain bin or on STEAM.

It does make me sad though that such a great franchise that has all the ingredients to be a great game hasn't had a truly "great" game come out of it yet. Now that we have all this "AlienS" flavored wreckage if anyone attempts another one the reception will most likely be the sound of eyeballs rolling accompanied by "Really ?"

What's amusing is that the old mocked E3 video looks heads and tails better than this, once again proving that companies put too much effort into trade show mockups which just ratchet up expectations.

But the animations and glitches, and bad kiddiefied voice acting... well... it REALLY makes it seem like this game was made for the 12 and under "we don`t want them crying themselves to sleep" crowd

I suspect they knew they had a turd, and were just trying to capitalize on the popularity of the source material. I'm really surprised, based on the prerelease videos going around, why anyone would have preordered this.

On a maxed out PC, the game looks ALOT better, tho still dated. I hear many say "well what did you expect", or your expectatations were too high. It is not too high an expectation to expect a visuals engine that is at least on parr with anything released within the same time span. Motion captured character movement.... another pretty well STANDARD feature today. DECENT voice acting.

And lets not forget a 1st person as WELL as a 3rd person Alien playable pov, to cover all player styles. I really EXPECTED that the sotryline would FEEL more mature, LIKE the movie AL()ENS. This is not a freaking kiddie walk thru Disneyland. DOOM III had amazing FEEL. Hell, AVP 1999 had amazing FEEL. The type of feel you could cut with a knife almost. I think the shaky badly done animations, and flufffilled voice acting hurt this game bad. The visuals on the right system are decent enough to just get the job done.

But the animations and glitches, and bad kiddiefied voice acting... well... it REALLY makes it seem like this game was made for the 12 and under "we don`t want them crying themselves to sleep" crowd. We really could have used a more serious attempt from a more SEASONED Developer.Someone who has a track record for this kinda game.

What we didn`t need was someone so Ego bloated, they`d have the nerve to openly spout off how they were going to correct Rebellions failures and A CMs was gonna what? Save the day???? It is Duke all over again, from the Patron Saints of Lost Cause Games.... GearBox.

"Hey... we`re canon... that`s how important we`ve become. How cool is that?" R. Pitchford

Now, there is some coolness to the game. Certainly not enough to brag about. But here we are again, waiting for someone REAL to get a kick at this franchise.

Absolutely!!!

You know, I've played the first level of this and it's not as bad as I thought it would be - in particular the Hive 'growth' looks perfect. The Aliens are a little too easy to kill, and it plays more like an arcade shooter, but that was what I was expecting, really.

I think 'criticisms' like "zOMG! A chestburster goes through armour!?! zOMG!" are total bullshit, to be honest. How do we know it wouldn't? That, and there's a lot more to criticise than that...

May post back with comments when I've played more than 1 level of the damn thing, but so far, it's atmospheric and a fun, no-brain shooter. And no, IMHO, it's no where near as bad as DNF.

I have played the A:CM campaign pretty solidly during the last two evenings after work, and I'm so over it. Despite being a huge Aliens fan, I'm really not enjoying it very much, and there have been several moments where I've had to have a break because I feel like putting my fist through the monitor. For oh so many reasons.

This is another such break. I'm not going to pick it up again until tomorrow night now.

I hate Fox calling this shit canon. Actually, that sentence is a little too long. I just fucking hate Fox. It's something they did just so that it might sell a few more copies. They don't give a fuck about the franchise or its quality, they just see $$$ signs.

Seems people are having a really good time hating on the game, there's lot to hate on.

I'm still enjoying it mostly for the atmosphere - so many throwback moments from the movie, I love the music (which is spot on to Aliens), sound effects and even the gameplay *gasp*. I must be lucky because playing on hardened the aliens attack me from behind if I get past them, haven't experienced any major glitches with the AI. If they had perfect aim and killed everything on the screen then there would be complaints that the game just plays itself.

Despite the story being full of "check your brain at the door" moments It's giving me a chance to revisit LV-426, kick some alien ass, get face raped by facehuggers. The "bro talk" isn't too bad, voice acting is fine - not anything like those lame trailers they made. I have to give gearbox props for the lighting tweaks they made to the unreal engine, some of the scenes are really eerie with flickering light and the shadows.

Is this the game I was hoping it would be, of course not. Is it what I more or less expected it would be from watching most of the trailers, pretty much.

In terms of "Alien" games I like it better than AVP2010 and feel it's on parity with AVP2, I could never get into AVP99 as it just felt like just a jumbled mess of levels too loosely strung together.

Video games are serious business though, especially when it comes to Alien franchise. As James Cameron put it regarding the Alien and Terminator franchises "the soup has been pissed in too many times", he won't go anywhere near them again and after this game I doubt we'll see a game from this franchise for a long, long time - I imagine SEGA will pull the plug on that "dead space" type Alien console game that creative assembly is rumored to be working on.

Whenever I would shoot at the aliens it felt like they all have about 8 animations and 5 different hit locations. Green acid here, here, here, head explode, dead. The pulse rifle didn't even feel fun. You just kind of point in the general direction of a bug wait for the head to explode and move to next bug. No hit tables for headshots or anything. (Not entirely true, if you run up to the things face and pull the trigger the head generally explodes in one shot) As it turns out, one of the first goals is find Hicks "Legendary" shotgun. I just so happen to find it! BUT it replaces my pulse rifle. I now have handgun, starter shotgun and hicks shotgun. I come to a next area and shotgun spray just isn't cutting it. I spend about 10minutes digging through the menu trying to figure how/if possible to equip my pulse rifle instead since I need some range. No luck. Continue to play, get to a section of face huggers and when I'm engaged with a boring scripted "Slam this button as fast as possible to get it off your face" event my AI NPC that I am going through the game with is firing at the bug, through my head the entire time. I have one block of health when I finally get this thing off my face and I then killed by the acid spurt when he shoots on the ground. That was enough of that game.

You just bring up the equip/inventory menu and you can choose your primary and secondary weapon. If you want to roll with two shotguns you can do that.
