Ships Ahoy - Aliens: Colonial Marines

SEGA announces that Aliens: Colonial Marines is now available worldwide, offering a new first-person shooter set in the Aliens sci-fi setting for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a WiiU edition coming at some future date. Here's the official launch trailer for the game, and here's word:
SEGA® of America, Inc., SEGA® Europe Ltd., Gearbox Software and Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products® today announced that its highly buzzed-about blockbuster Aliens™: Colonial Marines video game is now available on store shelves across the globe for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows® PC. A release date for the announced Wii U™ version will be revealed at a later time.

Pitting players against the universe’s deadliest killing machine, the Xenomorph, Aliens: Colonial Marines is the official video game continuation to one of Sci-Fi’s most renowned movie franchises. As the authentic addition to the ALIENS canon, the game’s stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action will deliver a breathtakingly immersive four-player drop-in drop-out cooperative campaign and four expansive competitive multiplayer modes – Escape, Team Deathmath, Survivor and Extermination.
The critical reception for the game so far has been pretty negative, and Eurogamer notes a this tweet and this one from sleuth superannuation pointing to this post from last year that he disregarded at the time. This includes a comment from someone claiming to be an ex-developer on the project saying at the time development had "been a total train wreck," and that Gearbox was only developing the multiplayer portion of a game primarily designed by TimeGate Studios.

I'm curious, did Gearbox develop the entire game by themselves? I wouldn't think the makers of BL1/BL2 would put out such a bad game.

EDIT: Nevermind, missed this part "... and that Gearbox was only developing the multiplayer portion of a game primarily designed by TimeGate Studios."

I've not followed the development closely, but I'd be curious if that was mentioned previously. It seems to have been brought to light more now that reviews are showing up.

Except that Randy was taking all the credit for the game anyway. In any case like Beamer said, its their responsibility. They are the ones who released the game in said state so they are the ones who should take the blame.

edit: It does make you wonder what's up at gearbox, though. They treat their own IP decent, while dumping out stuff acquired from previous devs. Guess it was a quick cash grab.
A dangerous cash grab, because this crap is associated with Gearbox, not with the former dev. For the second time Gearbox works with utter trainwrecks to put their name on. Does nobody care about their own reputation?

Well Im sad that it isnt a killer game. Since it was one of my most anticipated games in the last few years. Im not glad it turned out shit, in fact Im pissed as hell.

What does please me is that so many mainstream review sites called it out for what it is, a major turd. Because you see Gearbox (or any other developer for that matter) doesnt deserve 7/10 for a piece of shit game, like so many have been getting lately.

It has to tank and tank hard before developers get it through their media pampered brains that making a game on HYPE alone isnt enough.

Which is so weird.
Gearbox now has 2 recent releases, 2 out of 3, that sucked. And apparently sucked not from their work (though the multiplayer has been cited anywhere from "a ton of fun" in the two positive reviews I've read to "still boring" in most of the others), but from the work of others.

Gearbox is stamping their names on shitty games that they're not wholly responsible for. Which actually makes them wholly responsible. It's just a stupid thing to do in an industry where the name on the box is often what sells games as much as what the game actually is. There are people that will buy anything Epic or Valve. And, if Gearbox had only put out Borderlands 2 in the past 18 months, they'd be very close to being right there with them.

Instead there was Duke, and now there's this.

The last Aliens game which I picked up on a Steam sale for $5 was not very good either. I played it for a couple hours and then uninstalled it. So I do not find it surprising at all that this one would turn out to be even worse.

Same here... although I didn't uninstall it... played the Marine and got through the Aliens to the Predator section, and never touched it again.

Both reviews and the game's forum are filled with negativity.
So how else can I form an opinion about this game without paying for it?

If people loose their jobs over this game I am sorry but hopefully they learn from their mistakes and do a better job on their next game.

Yeah sorry SM, I totally get you and that makes sense. I was more referring to the people who are all happy about it. I love Aliens, this sucks things worked out this way.

Gearbox + long dev times apparently isn't a recipe for success. Their track record in picking up unfinished games and releasing is really iffy.

Worth a look at the right price I am sure, like most games.

I read that one, too. It's one of two I've found that don't say "terrible" multiple times.
Incidentally, it's also the two from non-game-dedicated sites.

Agreed, It's pathetic and childish. I'm sure most of these people don't give two shits what the game review media say most of the time.

For those saying "see its crap", have you played it yourself?

Given the release comments and reviews, I'll probably pick this up on a sale that has it at $5 or less.

"Coal" gift at next xmas steam sale.

THATS what we should do...we'll have a game club where you have to play through as much of a game as you can, only we'll pick the worst one possible. Whoever gets the farthest (with screenshot) "wins".

This is why I dont preorder games as a general rule. Can someone who bought and is currently playing the game be bothered to write a few sentences regarding their experience so far?

I'll only preorder if it comes with a $20 Amazon gift certificate, or is somehow else discounted about 33%.

And even then, only if it's a game I pretty much know I'll like. There were enough warning signs on this one that, even though I wasn't paying close enough attention and unwilling to make the "it's crap" statement many here did, I could certainly tell it wasn't necessarily something I'd want to put ahead in my queue of games to play.

I mean, hell, I preordered Saints Row 3, after adoring the first two, and only started it last week!

While the graphics don't look all that bad to me from the trailers... the horrid voice acting from one of those trailers still rings in my head.

Given the release comments and reviews, I'll probably pick this up on a sale that has it at $5 or less.
